What is the scientific term for living things?

biotic

100
Define photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use carbon dioxide and water to make a sugar (glucose) as food; at the end, the plant gives off oxygen.

100

I'm one of many small, mouth-like holes on a plant's surface that take in CO2.  What's my name?

Stomata

100

Organisms who eat plants and animals are called _______.

Omnivores.

100

What's the difference between a producer and a consumer?

A producer makes something and a consumer eats something.

200

What is the difference between dead and abiotic?

Dead implies that it was once living, whereas abiotic means it is non-living.

200

Where in the plant does photosynthesis occur?

It occurs in the chloroplasts.

200

I'm the source of all energy.  Without me, the whole ecosystem couldn't exist.  What's my name?

The Sun.

200

Photosynthesis takes place in a plant in its ________________.

Chloroplasts.

200

What materials does photosynthesis require?

CO2, sun, H2O.

300

Name the part of an ecosystem that makes its own food.

Producers

300

What materials are required for photosynthesis to take place?

Water, carbon dioxide, and the sun.

300

Breaking down and/or eating dead organisms is my game, can you guess what's my name?

Decomposer.

300

An organism that is living is __________________.

biotic

300

I consume only plants, and you may know me as a herbivore.  What's another name for me?

A primary consumer.

400

Why are decomposers important?

They break down dead organisms so the nutrients can return to the soil and get reused in the ecosystem.

400

What's the difference between the xylem and the phloem?

The xylem is the passageway within the plant going up, and it's used for transporting water and nutrients.

The phloem is the passageway within the plant that moves food down from the leaves to the roots.

400
Hi there!  I'm proud to say that I'm a producer.  What's my name?

Plant.

400

A community of living and non-living elements who interact with each other is called an __________.

Ecosystem.

400

What's the difference between a food chain and a food web?

A food chain has a beginning and an end, and it's one of many interconnected branches of a food web.

500

What happens when an ecosystem loses an element and is out of balance?  Give an example if that helps you answer the question.

When an ecosystem is out of balance it either dies or adapts in a way that puts it back in balance.  For example, if snakes hunters come and hunt all the snakes to extinction, there could be an overpopulation of squirrels.  If there is an overpopulation of squirrels, then acorns will become scarce.  If acorns become scarce, there might not be many oak trees that grow.  If there aren't enough oak trees, then all the organisms that call an oak tree home are in danger.

500

What materials are produced by photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis produces food (sugar, glucose) and oxygen.

500

I'm a product of photosynthesis that lives in the atmosphere.  What's my name?

Oxygen.

500

The process by which sunlight is used by plants to produce energy is called _______________.

Photosynthesis.

Explain the differences between a producer, a primary consumer, and a secondary consumer.

Plants are producers and the only organisms that create their own food.  Primary consumers eat plants.  Secondary consumers eat organisms that eat plants and/or other organisms.
