During photosynthesis, a plant takes water, carbon dioxide, and energy from sunlight in order to make glucose (sugar) and releases oxygen as a waste product.

The graph below shows the elk population in Yellowstone from 1923-2015. What changes to the ecosystem (plants, animals, river, etc)  would we expect to see between 1975 and 1991?

Claim: We would expect to see less beavers and a wider river form.

Evidence:

- elk pop. in 1971 = about 5,000

- elk pop. in 1995 = about 16,000

- elk pop. increased by 11,000 between 1971 and 1995.

Reasoning: One of the foods that elk eat are small trees. With a higher elk population, that would lead to more small trees being eaten, which would results in less trees growing. Since beavers also eat and use trees, this would lead to less beavers. Since trees also help stop erosion, less trees would mean the river could erode easier and become wider.
