Changes to Ecosystems
100
What is a producer? Include an example with your definition.
A producer is an organism that makes its own food. Example: A tree
100
Define a healthy ecosystem.
It is an ecosystem in which many organisms can meet their needs.
100
Define carnivore. Give an example.
A consumer that only eats animals. Example: Tiger
100
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain is the path of energy passed through a series of organisms in an ecosystem. A food web is overlapping food chains.
100
What is an example of a natural change in an environment?
Drought, flooding, migration etc
200
What is a consumer? Include an example.
A consumer is an organism that eats other organisms for food. Example: A lion
200
What is necessary in a healthy ecosystem for organisms to be able to meet their needs?
There needs to be a balance between predator and prey.
200
Define herbivore. Give an example.
A consumer that only eats plants. Example: Elephant
200
True or False: Matter is lost as it travels through a food chain.
False. Matter is recycled in an ecosystem.
200
What is a way that humans have a positive impact on ecosystems?
They plant new trees, set aside land to be protected, plant plants on hills to prevent erosion.
300
What is a decomposer? Include an example.
A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead organisms and wastes to live and grow. Example: Fungi
300
What would happen to an ecosystem if the top predator, such as the wolf in Yellowstone, was eliminated?
It would be come unhealthy because there would be no predator to control the numbers of its prey. Then that prey would consume all of its food and other consumers' food and eventually animals would die or need to move to a new ecosystem to find food.
300
Define omnivore. Give an example.
A consumer that eats both plants an animals. Example: Humans, bears
300
Matter is recycled in an ecosystem. _________ is lost as it travels through a food chain.
Energy
300
What are some negative ways humans impact ecosystems?
Deforestation, over fishing, pollution etc
400
What is a predator? Include an example.
A predator is an animal that hunts and eats other animals. Example: Wolf
400
If one animal is eliminated from a food chain, which organism is affected in the food chain? Give an example.
ALL of them. Example: Algae-->fish-->heron. If there were no more fish the heron would starve and the algae would overpopulate.
400
A predator would be which type of consumer?
Carnivore or omnivore.
400
Energy in a food chain comes from __________.
The sun.
400
What is an invasive species? Give an example.
A non-native organism brought to a new ecosystem that often causes harm. Example: Kudzo, zebra mussel
500
What is prey? Include an example.
Prey is an animal that is hunted and eaten by another animal. Example: Deer
500
How could climate change affect an ecosystem? (Give 2 examples)
Animals move north or to higher elevations for cooler temperatures. Animals struggle to find a food source (Polar bears hunt on the ice, if the ice melts and they move to land earlier they might starve) Plants begin to disappear from their original location because they need a certain temperature. Plants might bloom earlier. Animals might migrate/hibernate at different times.
500
Create a food chain including a producer, herbivore, and carnivore.
Example: grass-->deer--->wolf.
500
Why are humans part of many different food webs?
Humans are consumers and eat many different organisms that are found in many different ecosystems.
500
When there is a disturbance that causes change in an ecosystem it can recover. What is the term for the slow change in which a group of organisms replaces another group until a stable community is formed?
Succession
