The Man Under the Bodhi Tree
(1) Young prince Siddhartha Gautama lived in India a long time ago. (2) He was handsome, clever, and rich. (3) He had a beautiful wife. (4) The prince enjoyed himself, eating and drinking, and wandering about his palace. (5) His family was cautious not to let him outside the palace walls, thus preventing him from seeing the hard realities of life. (6) However, one day, he decided to step out for a stroll, and on the street he noticed a figure hobbling along. (7) It was an old man, bent and leaning on a stick. (8) Further on, the prince met a young man, pale and sick with disease. (9) The prince halted to observe his surroundings more carefully, and was shocked to see the pain and suffering around him.
(10) Gautama was horrified. (11) In all his happy life, he had never been exposed to unhappiness or pain. (12) Now, he could not understand why most people seemed to be full of sadness and suffering, and decided to seek the truth. (13) That night, he secretly slipped out of his palace, leaving his riches and family behind, with the intention of not returning until he had his answers. (14) He roamed the land in search of an answer to his questions.
(15) He had become thin and his clothes were in rags. (16) For several weeks, he sat deep in meditation under a tree called the bodhi tree. (17) He finally found the answer that he had been seeking. (18) He realized that people made themselves unhappy by seeking luxuries and comforts all the time. (19) People did not understand that they could achieve peace simply by being kind and doing good deeds. (20) Gautama set out to enlighten people with his new revelation.
(21) The teachings of Gautama spread throughout India and all of Asia. (22) His followers called him the Buddha or "Enlightened One." (23) Today, the Buddha is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of the world. (24) His teachings have not only influenced millions of people but also the fields of philosophy and literature.
