The silence in the car is difficult to bear. I turn on the radio, and music fills the air. My fingers tap to the beat on the steering wheel. The guitars vibrate so loudly, they almost seem real. I glance at my child, sleeping in his car seat. The volume goes down, and he rests, so sweet. The road stretches out before me, like a ribbon of gray. Only a few more hours, and we will find a place to stay. I begin to sing again, as a new song plays on the radio. This time, however, I detect a small echo. The volume goes down, and I listen carefully. There is another voice, and I know it is not me. When you get a minor cut, the most important thing is to wash it right away. Using a cleanser such as rubbing alcohol is best, but using soap and hot water will work just fine, as well. Once the cut is clean, dab the area around the cut dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. To keep the cut from being infected, smooth some antibiotic cream on top and lightly rub it in. Then, cover it with an adhesive bandage. At night, if the wound is not bleeding, it is sometimes good to let the wound breathe, but always clean it and cover it before heading out again the next day. A to describe what to do if the reader gets a cut B to persuade the reader to buy some rubbing alcohol C to narrate a story about getting a terrible cut D to inform the reader about the dangers of minor cuts

Some students do not understand the importance of correct spelling. A single misspelled word in a sentence can turn it into nonsense. These days, students do not put in the effort to check the spelling in their papers. They rely too much on computers to correct misspelled words for them. Most often, words are misspelled because they sound similar such as in the case of homophones. (Homophones are words that share the same pronunciation. However, they differ in definition and sometimes spelling.) Although homophones can make spelling more difficult, anyone with patience can spell like a pro. The best way to learn how to spell correctly is to carefully look at how the word is used in the sentence. Another way is to read more books and to look up definitions in the dictionary. Though these are only a few suggestions, they definitely will help improve grades. This passage is most likely written from whose point of view? A a programmer B a professor C a performer D an illustrator

The Busy Blue Jay One of the most interesting birds who ever lived in my bird house was a blue jay named Jakie. He was very busy from morning till night. Poor little fellow! He had been stolen from the nest before he could fly, and looked after in a house long before he was given to me. Of course, he could not be set free, for he did not know how to take care of himself. Blue jays are very active birds, and since Jakie was shut up in a room, he had to find things to do, to keep himself busy. If he had been allowed to fly outside, he would have found plenty to do,saving acorns and nuts for a rainy day, nesting, and bringing up baby blue jays. Sometimes I thought he was mischievous, because he did naughty things such as hammering the wooden window frame to pieces, tearing bits out of the pages of books, working holes in chair seats, or pounding a cardboard box to pieces. However, how is a poor little bird to know what mischief is? Many things that Jakie did were very interesting. For instance, he made it his business to clear up the room. When he had more food than he could eat, he did not leave it around, he saved it in some corner. He was a timid little fellow. If there was wind or a storm outside the windows, he went wild with fear.He would fly around the room, squawking at the top of his voice. Once I brought a Christmas tree into the house but my poor little blue jay, seemed afraid of it. Jakie was very devoted to me. He always greeted me with a low, sweet chatter, and if he was out of the cage, he would come on to the back of my chair. Then he would touch my cheek or lips very gently with his beak, or offer me a bit of food if he had any; and to me alone when no one else was near, he sang a low, beautiful song. How would this story be different if it were written from Jakie’s point of view? A The audience would be able to learn important facts about many different birds. B The audience would know more about how both the owner and Jakie felt. C The audience would be able to learn Jakie’s opinion about his owner. D The audience would be able to understand how the owner felt about Jakie.

I knew my father had something up his sleeve when he woke me at 5:00 a.m. one Saturday. He yanked the shades on my bedroom window up, flooding the whole space with bright sunlight. I was about to yell at whoever had disturbed my sleep, until I saw the grin on his face. My father and I have never been especially close. We have just never had much in common, and we are both busy much of the time. He seems to work constantly, and I’m always buried in schoolwork so that I can get into a good college. Still, I was puzzled at his behavior and at the excitement in his voice as he stood in my bedroom. “I’ve made breakfast for us, Kristin,” he said. “Hurry and get dressed!” “Dressed for what?” I asked, propping myself up in bed. “It’s a surprise!” he called, dashing out the door. After showering, I dressed and made my way down to the kitchen, where the wonderful scent of breakfast hit my nose. I was not going to complain about being up so early now. We ate quietly for a while, until the suspense was just too much. “Where are we going today, Dad?” “Well, it occurred to me a couple of days ago that you’ve never been boating with me,” he said, watching my face carefully for a reaction. I had secretly wanted to learn everything my dad knew about boating, although I had never asked him. My mom and I had been out on the water with him before, but he just always seemed so peaceful at the helm of the boat. My heart began thudding with anticipation, and I suddenly could not wait to leave. After breakfast, we drove out to the marina where his boat, the Tennessee, was anchored. We pushed off from the dock, and he showed me how to run the sails up the mast and how to steer the vessel. The bay was completely silent as we sailed through the calm water toward the rising sun. “I am so glad you brought me out here, Dad,” I said after a few moments. “I started boating when I was about your age,” he replied. “I’ve waited my whole life to pass this hobby on to my own child.” We continued sailing as the morning air grew warmer, and I felt the sea mist spray across my face. I had never felt so peaceful, or so close to my father in my life. How does the point of view affect the story? A The reader knows what every character thinks and sees. B The reader knows only what the father thinks and sees. C The reader knows only what the narrator thinks and sees. D The reader feels like he or she is part of the story
