What is supporting sentences?
This is a person, place, or thing.

This is a made-up story.

A piece of nonfiction writing told in the first person by someone who was involved in the events being described

The first sentence in a paragraph that introduces the topic.

This is a word used to describe a noun.

This is a true story that sometimes provides information or facts.

Clues that we use within a text to help us determine the meaning of an unknown word or what the author is trying to tell us.

During the time that the Condoleezza Rice story took place, black people had to go to specific black hospitals and were not allowed in white hospitals because of this.

The final sentence in a paragraph.

This is an action word.

What is a feminist?
You do this to the first sentence in a paragraph to create a visual break within the text.
This replaces a noun.

Told from the narrator’s perspective; “I” is the narrator

The basic way a story or essay is organized

This is what a paragraph is all about and is usually stated in the topic sentence.

Expectation or a feeling of looking forward to something.
Person who receives a benefit or advantage

This is the text structure that we learned about in lesson 3 where one event creates a change or results in a following event. For example, Condoleezza Rice's father had a daughter and this made him a feminist.
