Read the title, look at the first and last sentence in the story, look for repeating words or ideas, and for non-fiction you can use the headings.

I use the information in the text to make an EDUCATED GUESS about what is happening.

What is the difference between main idea and lesson learned?
Main idea is specifically about what happened in the story and the characters, while lesson learned is a big idea you can use in life that doesn't connect to characters.

What should I do when a question is about a specific paragraph?
Go back and read that paragraph and the ones around it!
