What does Oil Rig stand for?

The Oil Rig stands for:

Oxidation Is Loss

Reduction Is Gained

100

What is the process in which electrons are lost?

The process in which a substance loses an electron is called oxidation.

100

How can you tell a battery is a primary battery?

produce electric energy by redox reduction, not easily reversed

100

In which electrode does reduction occur?

 Cathode

100

What is electronegativity, and how does it contribute to creating a voltaic cell?

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract or lose electrons.  It contributes to creating a voltaic cell because it will define which is the cathode and which is the anode, depending on the element’s electronegativity).

200

What is the Formula for electric potential?

E cell = E reduction - E oxidation

200

What is electrical potential?

Electrical potential is a measurement of the ability of a voltaic cell to produce an electric current.

200

Explain what is an electrode and an electrolyte?

An electrolyte is a solution of ions. An electrode is a device used to make an electrical connection.

200

Why is zinc oxidized in the zinc-copper redox reaction?

It is oxidized because it is transferring its electrons to copper.

200

What is the oxidation number of NO2-?

-4 + x = -1

x = -1 + 4

x = +3

300

How can you identify a redox reaction?

Change in oxidation number

300

What is the difference between a normal battery and a rechargeable battery?

Normal batteries start at a higher voltage while a rechargeable batteries start at a lower voltage

Rechargeable batteries lasts a longer time while non-rechargeable ones are a one time use

300

Difference between a fueled cell and a battery

A battery stores energy, while a fuel cell generates energy by converting available fuel.

300

How would you develop a cell/battery that stores energy, produces heat, and doesn’t need to be recharged?

By creating a fuel cell that only needs to be supplied to create electricity and heat.

300

Is Ag → Ag+2 being oxidized or reduced

Oxidized

400

If you were to create your own battery, what components would you use and why?

1. Anode (material to that gets reduced)

2. Cathode (Material that is getting oxidized)

3. Electrolyte (any sort of obtainable acid)

  1. You would need each of these components in order to create the battery since first you need the cathode, that will provide the electrons to the anode

  2. The anode that will absorb the flow of the electrons coming from the cathode

  3. The electrolyte in order to allow the flow of electrons in between the anode and the cathode.

400

How would you develop a battery that never runs out?

This would be nearly impossible as eventually, the chemical energy made from the reaction that turns to electric energy would run out. In this day and age, you would have to use an external power source to keep the reaction going. There are theories that in the future a battery that lasted forever would have to be somehow of nuclear reactor. This is highly unlikely but the basic answer would be to somehow to keep the electrons transferring from the anode to the cathode in order for them to keep producing electrical energy.

400

Determine/ identify the reaction as spontaneous or non spontaneous:

2Al3(aq) + 3Cu(s) → 3Cu2(aq) + 2Al(s)

 non spontaneous

400

What effect does a negative standard cell potential (voltage) have in a battery?

The reaction would not be spontaneous, meaning it would need an electric current to work.

Draw a diagram (two sides with a salt bridge and its components) where Al is oxidized and the electrons flow to the H electrode.

Equation =

Al + HCI = AlCl3 + H2
