Identify the setting, conflict and rising action

The sun had barely risen over the sleepy town of Elmridge when twelve-year-old Jonah slipped out the back door of his house, his backpack stuffed with maps, snacks, and a compass he barely knew how to use. Ever since his older brother disappeared in the woods two years ago, Jonah had been obsessed with finding out what really happened. Most people said it was an accident, that he got lost and never came back—but Jonah never believed that.

As he reached the edge of the forest, a sudden gust of wind blew through the trees, and something shiny caught his eye near the base of an old oak. It was a silver pendant—his brother’s. Jonah froze, heart pounding. This was the proof he needed. Someone had been here recently.

Without thinking, he stepped off the trail and into the underbrush, following a faint path that twisted deeper into the woods. The trees grew thicker, the light dimmer, and every sound seemed louder than it should have been. But Jonah pressed on, determined to uncover the truth, even if it meant facing whatever secrets the forest had been hiding all along.

Read the passage below. Determine if the character is round or flat

Jordan always sat in the back of the classroom, doodling in the margins of his notebook. Most people thought he didn’t care about school, but what they didn’t know was that he stayed up late every night reading science articles and building small gadgets in his garage. When the science fair was announced, Jordan hesitated—he didn’t like attention—but eventually signed up, surprising everyone with a solar-powered water purifier he had designed himself.

Round

Jordan is a round character because he has depth and complexity. The passage reveals both how others perceive him (a student who doesn’t care) and his hidden passion and intelligence (staying up late to read and invent). His decision to enter the science fair, despite not liking attention, also shows growth and internal conflict, which are traits of a round character.

Tariq never raised his voice, even when he was frustrated. He always stayed behind to help clean up after group projects and remembered everyone’s birthday. When the new student dropped her books in the hallway, Tariq was the first to kneel down and help her gather them.

She lost heart about herself and took no interest in anything... Izzie brought her books, but she didn’t want to read, or to sew. Nothing amused her.”

He didn’t protest, didn’t speak up—just kept doing what he always did.
