What is the best position to get into if you are caught in an open area when there is lightening?
"Crouch down in a ball-like position (feet and knees together) with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground. Do NOT lie down. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly over 100 feet away. Crouching down is the best combination of being low and touching the ground as little as possible."

What is a hurricane?
A hurricane is a huge storm! It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong winds spiraling inward and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph. Each hurricane usually lasts for over a week, moving 10-20 miles per hour over the open ocean. Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters.

Name 3 groups that may be more at risk for heat-related illness or death.
People over age 65 Outdoor workers Athletes Infants and children Low-income individuals People with chronic medical conditions (medication, awareness)

How are earthquakes measured?
The magnitude of an earthquake, usually expressed by the Richter Scale, is a measure of the amplitude of the seismic waves. The moment magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the amount of energy released - an amount that can be estimated from seismograph readings.

What American state has the most active volcanoes?
There are about 169 volcanoes in the United States that scientists consider active. Most of these are located in Alaska, where eruptions occur virtually every year. Others are located throughout the west and in Hawaii (see our Volcano Activity Map for their locations).
200
What is the best way to prevent injury from lightening?
"Be aware and avoid it. Check the weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If the forecast calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity, or make sure adequate safe shelter is readily available."

Name 5 supplies that you may need in the event of a hurricane emergency.
Food and Medicine: Clean containers for water At least 5 gallons of water per person (which should be enough to last 3 to 5 days) A 3 to 5 day supply of food that doesn’t go bad (like canned food) Baby food or formula Prescription medicines Safety Items: First aid kit and instructions Fire extinguisher Battery-powered radio Flashlights Extra batteries Sleeping bags or extra blankets Supplies to make drinking water safe (like iodine tablets or chlorine bleach) Personal Care Items: Hand sanitizer Wet cleaning cloths (like baby wipes) Soap Toothpaste Tampons and pads Diapers

Name three symptoms of heat exhaustion.
Heavy sweating Weakness Cold, pale, and clammy skin Fast, weak pulse Nausea or vomiting Fainting
200
What is the most likely source of injury during an earthquake?
Flying or falling objects
200
What is the most common cause of death resulting from volcanoes?
Suffocation (hazardous gases, volcanic ash).

Name three types of electronic equipment you should avoid during a thunder/lightening storm.
Do NOT use your computers, laptops, game systems, washers, dryers, stoves, or anything connected to an electrical outlet. Lightning can travel through electrical systems, radio and television reception systems, and any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring. Equip homes with whole-house surge protectors to protect appliances. Corded phones are NOT safe to use during a thunderstorm. Do NOT use them. However, it is safe to use cordless or cellular phones during a storm.

What are the two kinds of alerts announced by the National Weather Service if there is risk of a hurricane?
A hurricane watch means that there's no hurricane yet, but weather conditions could cause one. Experts will announce a hurricane watch 48 hours before they think dangerous winds will start. A hurricane warning is more serious. It means a hurricane has already started or is just about to start.

If your home is not air-conditioned, name two ways you can stay safe in extreme heat.
Contact your local health department or locate an air-conditioned shelter in your area. You can also contact Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for help. Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Check on a friend or neighbor, and have someone do the same for you. Seek medical care immediately if you have, or someone you know has, symptoms of heat-related illness.

What should you do if there is an earthquake while you are in bed?
If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. Broken glass on the floor has caused injury to those who have rolled to the floor or tried to get to doorways.
300
Name another disaster that may result from a volcanic eruption.
Earthquake Flood Landslide Mudslide Power outage Wildfire
400
What percentage of lightening-strike injuries occur indoors?
1/3
400
Why is it a good idea to clear your yard of furniture, toys, grills, etc. in preparation for a hurricane?
Because it may blow around and damage your home during the storm.
400
Name three symptoms of heat stroke.
High body temperature (above 103°F)* Hot, red, dry or moist skin Rapid and strong pulse Possible unconsciousness

What is the best position to be in if you are inside during an earthquake?
If you are inside, stay inside. DO NOT run outside or to other rooms during shaking. In most situations, you will reduce your chance of injury from falling objects and even building collapse if you immediately: DROP down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down. This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary. COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under the shelter of a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around. DO NOT stand in a doorway. You are safer under a table. In modern houses, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the house. The doorway does not protect you from the most likely source of injury−falling or flying objects. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are caused by falling or flying objects (e.g., TVs, lamps, glass, bookcases), or by being knocked to the ground.

What should you do if lava is headed toward you?
Leave the area immediately. If you can drive rather than walk, use your vehicle to evacuate. When driving keep doors and windows closed, do not use air conditioning, and watch for unusual hazards in the road.
500
Why should you avoid bathing, showering, or washing dishes while a thunderstorm is going on?
Because lightning can travel through a building’s plumbing.
500
Name one organization you could call to locate a shelter during a disaster.
American Red Cross

Name three things you should do if you or someone you know experiences heat exhaustion or stroke.
EXHAUSTION: Move to a cooler location. Lie down and loosen your clothing. Apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible. Sip water. If you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention immediately STROKE: Call 911 immediately — this is a medical emergency. Move the person to a cooler environment. Reduce the person's body temperature with cool cloths or even a bath. Do NOT give fluids.

What should you do if you are outside during an earthquake?
If outdoors, stay outside and move away from buildings, utility wires, sinkholes, and fuel and gas lines. The greatest danger from falling debris is just outside doorways and close to outer walls. Once in the open, get down low (to avoid being knocked down by strong shaking) and stay there until the shaking stops. The area near the exterior walls of a building is the most dangerous place to be. Windows, facades and architectural details are often the first parts of the building to collapse.

What are two pieces of equipment you can use to protect yourself from falling ash resulting from a volcanic eruption?
Long-sleeve shirt Long pants Goggles Disposable particulate respirator (air-purifying respirator)
