Why is it important to wear goggles during an experiment?

To not get any harmful substances in your eyes.

100

What is a variable?

Factors that can change in an experiment must be the same.

100

What is a reflex?

An automatic response that occurs rapidly and without conscious control.

100

What is an organ?

A body structure composed of different kinds of tissues that work together.

200

Why should you never eat in the lab?

You do not know what substances have been used or not cleaned properly and you do not want to consume anything harmful.

200

What is the manipulated / independent variable?

The factor in an experiment that gets purposely changed.

200

How do the brain and spinal cord work together?

The brain and spinal cord send and interpret messages.

200

What is a tissue?

Similar cells that perform the same function that are grouped together.

300

True or false- pointed tip scissors, scalpels, knives, needles, pins or tacks cannot hurt you.

False.

300

What is the responding / dependent variable?

The factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable.

300

What is a neuron?

A cell that carries information through the nervous system.

300

What is stress?

The reaction of a person’s body to potentially threatening, challenging, or disturbing events.

400

Why is it important to notify a teacher when something breaks in the lab?

So that no one is injured by the broken object and it is cleaned up properly.

400

What is the scientific method?

The steps someone takes to identify a question, develop a hypothesis, design and carry out steps or procedure to test the hypothesis write down data, and draw a conclusion.

400

What is a synapse?

The junction where one neuron can transfer the impulse to the next structure.

400

What is homestasis?

Maintaining the body at a specific temperature (98.6) and keeping the body balanced.

500

Why should you follow lab safety rules?

To stay safe from danger in the lab (examples: glass breakage, chemicals, poison, etc.)

  1. The manager of an automobile factory feels that his workers aren’t working as well as they could and thinks that he can improve productivity by having workers drink Awesome Drink Energy Juice.  He splits his workers into two groups, group A and group B:  Group A receives the Awesome Drink Energy Juice and Group B does not.  He asks them to assemble as many cars as possible in one hour.  At the end of one hour, Group A assembled 27 cars and Group B assembled 41 cars. What is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?

The independent variable is the energy drink. The dependent variable is the amount of cars that were assembled.

500

What is the peripheral nervous system?

A network of nerves that branches out from the central nervous system and connects to the rest of the body.

What are the 11 human body systems?

The skeletal, integumentary, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, and immune systems.
