100
What tool is used to measure temperature?
Thermometer
100
What is the measure of how hot or cold something is?
Temperature
100
How do ocean currents affect coastal temperatures?
As currents flow, they warm or cool the atmosphere above, affecting local temperatures. Warm currents result in warmer temperatures in local land and cold currents result in a cooler temperature in local land.
100
Define climate.
Describes the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
100
Define latitude
The angular distance in degrees north and south from the equator.
200
What tool measures air pressure?
Barometer
200
Describe humidity.
The amount of water vapor in the air.
200
Which ocean current directly affects the weather along the southernmost coast of the eastern United States?
The Gulf Stream
200
What are the 3 major climate zones?
Temperate, tropical, and polar
200
Define global warming
A gradual increase in average global temperature.
300
What tool measure relative humidity?
Psychrometer
300
What are 2 results of visibility?
Air pollution and fog
300
Define weather.
The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.
300
What are currents on the surface of the ocean and how do they affect climate?
They are surface currents. They carry warm water away from the equator and cool water away from the poles. The temperature of the water affect coastal temperatures.
300
Define jet streams
Long distance winds that travel above global winds for thousands of kilometers.
400
Name the 2 ways weather data can be collected.
Stationary and moving.
400
How are air pressure and density related?
They both decrease with altitude.
400
Describe how different parts of the water cycle affect weather.
Evaporation- occurs when water turns into water vapor (a gas) which makes the air humid depending on the amount of water vapor in the air Condensation-occurs when water cools and changes from a liquid to a gas: affects weather by changing the amount of water vapor in the air (humidity) and forming clouds and fog (affecting visibility) Precipitation- occurs when rain, snow, hail, or sleet falls from the cloud to Earth's surface. Affects weather because precipitation comes to Earth's surface.
400
How is latitude related to climate?
The climate of an area depends on the amount of energy and direct sunlight from the Sun the area receives. The amount of solar energy depends on the latitude because different latitudes recieve different amounts of solar energy.
400
Define air mass
A large volume of air in which temperature and moisture content are nearly the same throughout.
500
Name 3 tools to measure wind.
Wind vane, anemometer, and wind sock.
500
What occurs when there is dew on the ground?
More condensation than evaporation occurs.
500
How do the jet streams affect weather?
The jet streams affect the temperature. For example, jet streams can pull cold air down from Canada to the US and pull warm air from the U.S. to Canada. Jet streams also affect precipitation patterns.
500
Describe how mountains can affect climate.
When moist air hits a mountain, it is forced to rise up the side of the mountain. The rising air cools and often releases rain.
500
What is the difference between relative humidity and regular humidity?
Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air and relative humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation.
