The main goals of the Great Society were to end poverty, reduce crime, abolishing inequality and improving the environment. The War on Poverty hoped to make America more equitable however conservative push back made it almost impossible achieve this goal. The Vietnam War forced LBJ to direct funds away from the Great Society programs.

The instability and conflict of the Cold War led to a call for stability at home, lauding strong nuclear families. Suburbs and government assistance for veterans improved the lives of thousands however due to discrimination, not all families experienced the same prosperity.

Explain why anti-Vietnam War protests began. 

The Tet Offensive of 1968 was a series of coordinated Northern Vietnamese attacks on the South that showed how brutal the war was. Despite its heavy casualty toll, and its failure to inspire widespread rebellion among the South Vietnamese, the Tet Offensive proved to be a strategic success for the North Vietnamese. Americans became dissatisfied with the cruelty and bloodshed. Many protests started in on college campuses and in major cities like Washington D.C.

Jimmy Carter believed too much in the function of the government rather than how it should operate. American voters were dissatisfied with the lack of transparency. Carter began his presidency during stagflation and served during the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979 which marred his final term as POTUS
