What is setting?
The opening of a story or text that grabs the reader's attention so they'll keep reading
What is a hook?
A person or object is compared to another by saying one IS the other (does not use like/as)

A group of lines in a poem, separated by space (similar to a paragraph)

Characters are unrealistic, can include mythical creatures, talking animals, and other magical elements

The feeling or atmosphere the reader gets when they read the story

An opinion or argument that the author of a text is trying to prove to the reader

A detective solves a crime, author includes clues and evidence to help the reader solve the crime alongside the main character

The lesson the author wants the reader to take away from the story

Specific examples, facts, and research the author uses to support their reasons
What is evidence?
An extreme and obvious exaggeration, not meant to be taken literally
What is a hyperbole?
Poetry that lacks a consistent rhyme scheme
What is free verse?
Stories that are made up but could very well happen in real life, take place in the present or recent past
What is realistic fiction?
The author's attitude toward the subject
What is tone?
A single, complete sentence that concisely expresses your view concerning a particular topic
What is an alliteration?
A three line poem consisting of 5 syllables, 7 syllables, and 5 syllables
What is a haiku?
Stories about science and technology of the future, may include futuristic beings such as robots, aliens, and mutants
What is science fiction?
The "main character" of the story, the hero
What is a protagonist?
When the author addresses and challenge a claim by disproving it
What is a rebuttal?
A word that imitates the natural sound of things
What is an onomatopoeia?
A four-line stanza with alternating rhyme and a unified topic
What is a quatrain?
Typically explores political and social oppression, usually takes place in a grim, post-apocalyptic society
