The Situation:

On Monday morning, before school starts, Ms. Carter receives a text message from Jordan:

"I don’t want to talk today. I messed up really bad last night and I don’t know what to do. I was drinking with some older people and now I think something happened that I can’t stop thinking about. Please don’t tell anyone. I just needed to tell someone."

Later that morning, Ms. Carter sees Jordan in the hallway. Jordan looks withdrawn and avoids eye contact. Ms. Carter asks if they’re okay, and Jordan replies, “I'm fine. I don't want to talk about it. I just feel gross. But don’t report anything. I'm not hurt or anything.”

In a follow-up message later that day, Jordan adds:

"Nothing violent happened. I just feel like I was too drunk to give an answer and now I feel like I might have been used. But I really don’t want my parents to know. They’ll freak out. I’m just trying to forget about it.”

School district policy states that school staff must report any incidents that involve:

Possible abuse or exploitation of a minor

Risk of self-harm or harm to others

Any criminal activity involving a student

Ms. Carter is ethically and legally obligated to report the situation to the appropriate authorities.
