How many kidneys do most people have?

Two

Most people are born with two kidneys, but only need one. Here's why. Each kidney contains 1.5 million filters for blood called nephrons. Nephrons purify blood and remove waste products. Your body can survive on as few as 300,000 nephrons, but if the number of nephrons drops below 300,000 you may need dialysis treatment.

These insulin dependent individuals have the highest incidence of ESRD.

Type II DM patients.

100

Term that describes the retention of a mineral found in bananas that is increased in ESRD and the condition is known by this name.

Hyperkalemia

This drug class is most prescribed for ESRD patients.

Diuretics

This type of dialysis requires more complex training for the nurse.

Hemodialysis

Where are your kidneys located in the body?

Your kidneys are located on either side of your spine at the lowest level of the rib cage in a very remote part of your abdomen partially covered by ribs. This provides some protection against injury. Although they are somewhat difficult to approach for surgery, specialized techniques have been developed for kidney surgery including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, sound wave technology and small scopes for approach through the bladder.

This developmental population is most susceptible for ESRD.

The older adult.

This treatment is considered a last resort and is the most invasive for ESRD.

This can be used by a patient at home to keep track of their daily weights and blood pressures.

What treatment is necessary if your kidneys stop functioning?

Dialysis or Kidney Transplant

Before dialysis was available, total kidney failure meant death. When your kidneys stop working, toxins build up in your body and within two weeks you need to go on dialysis. Dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood, becoming an artificial kidney. It gets rid of your body's wastes, extra salt and water, and helps to control your blood pressure. Another alternative is receiving a kidney transplant. Currently, there are 430,000 Americans are on dialysis, and more than 101,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant.

300

Term used to describe chronic inflammation of the smallest unit of the kidney. It is identified as the third-leading cause of ESRD.

Nephritis

300

Type of respirations that occur when the lungs compensate for decreased blood pH by blowing off excess CO2.

Kussmaul Respirations

300

This type of dialysis occurs more slowly, causes weight gain, and is usually performed more often.

Peritoneal Dialysis

300

Family members of the critically-ill patient can often experience this due to the chronic nature of ESRD.

Name 2 things that put you at risk for kidney disease.

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure and a family history of kidney failure you are at increased risk for kidney disease.

400

There are five sociocultural groups at-risk for ESRD, name three of them.

African American, Native American, Hispanic American, Asian American and Pacific Islander

400

These two labs are followed closely when a patient has ESRD to monitor kidney function.

BUN and Creatinine

400

This type of dialysis takes less time, may cause dysrrhythmias, and occurs through vascular access.

Hemodialysis

400

This should not be done on a patient's arm that has an AV fistula.

Every day our kidneys perform an essential job of filtering how many liters of blood?

The kidneys filter 200 liters of blood evey day, enough to fill a large bathtub, removing two liters of toxins, wastes and water from your body.

In contrast to ESRD, hyponatremia occurs in this stage of renal disease. (Opposite of End)
