What are endocrine glands?
This master gland is about the size of a grape located at the base of the brain.
What is the pituitary gland?
This hormone is secreted by the ovaries.
What is estrogen?
This hormone stimulates the thyroid gland.
What is the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)?
Symptoms - high body temperature, high BMR, exophthalmos
What is Graves' disease?
This is the tissue or organ upon which a hormone acts.
What is a target tissue (organ)?
This is both an endocrine and exocrine gland, located behind the stomach.
What is the pancreas?
This hormone is associated with the "fight or flight" response.
What is epinephrine?
This hormone controls rate of metabolism.
What is thyroxine?
Symptoms - moon face, buffalo hump, bruise easily, hyperglycemia
What is Cushing's?
This brain structure links the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland.
What is the hypothalamus?
This butterfly shaped gland is located on the anterior side of the larynx, over the trachea.
What is the thyroid?
This hormone is responsible for growth and development.
What is growth hormone (GH)?
This hormone regulates the formation and maintainable of the skeleton.
What is calcitonin?
Complication when a diabetic person skips a meal, vomits, or administers to much insulin
What is Hypoglycemia
The breakdown of glycogen into glucose
What is glycogenolysis?
These four glands are the size of a grain of rice attached to the posterior side of the thyroid.
What are the parathyroid glands?
This hormone produces uterine contractions.
What is oxytocin?
This hormone develops breast tissue and stimulates production of milk after childbirth.
What is prolactin?
Symptoms - Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia
What is diabetes mellitus?
These structures house the hormone producing cells of the pancreas.
What is are the Islets of Langerhans
This serves both the endocrine and lymphatic systems, located under the sternum, and is large during childhood.
What is the thymus?
The hormone insulin help store and deliver this substance to the liver.
What is glucose?
This hormone acts on the kidney to concentrate urine and preserve water in the body.
What is antidiuretic hormone (ADH)?
Symptoms - Bones in face, hands, and feet are over developed causing protrusion of chin, and enlargement of lips, nose, and extremities
