True or False: The FASTER an object moves, the LESS kinetic energy it has

False

100

What is potential energy?

Stored energy due to interactions between particles.
100

What is thermal energy?

Thermal energy is the energy due to the motion of particles that make up an object

100

Name 3 sources for radiant energy

Sun, lightbulb, lamp, etc

100

What is energy?

Energy is the ability to cause change

200

What is kinetic energy?

Kinetic energy is energy due to motion occuring

200

What are the three major types of potential energy?

Gravitational, Elastic, and Chemical

200

What is the SI unit for measuring temperature?

Degrees Celsius
200

What is sound energy?

Sound energy is energy produced by vibrating objects. For example, plucking a guitar string is an example of sound energy.

200

What are the two kinds of energy changes?

Transformations and transfers

300

What affects the kinetic energy of an object?

The mass and speed of the object

300

What happens to an object's potential energy when it accelerates

The potential energy decreases

300

What is temperature?

Temperature is the average kinetic energy of the particles that make up a material

300

What is the energy based on motion and position?

Mechanical energy

300

What is the SI unit for energy?

Joules (J)

400

If an apple is falling from a tree, at what point in its journey would it have the most kinetic energy?

Right before it hits the ground.

400

Where on Earth would an object have the most gravitational potential energy? A hill, airplane, or valley

An airplane would have the most gravitational potential energy

400

What is the relationship between the kinetic energy of particles and temperature?

They have a direct relationship. For example, when the kinetic energy of particles increases, the temperature increases as well.

400

What similar effect do friction and air resistance have on a roller coaster's energy?

Friction and air resistance have a similar effect on a roller coaster's energy because they both can transform the energy into other types (thermal and heat). This results in less energy overall to finish the coaster.

400

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed; It can be transformed from one form into another or transferred from one region to another.

500

How are kinetic energy and temperature related?

Higher temperature --> More Kinetic Energy

Lower temperature --> Less Kinetic Energy

500

Explain the kinetic and potential energy changes in this situation:

A roller coaster starting at the top of the hill, accelerating down, reaches the bottom of the hill, and then goes back up a hill

All potential energy stored when the roller coaster is at the top transforms into kinetic energy, and then as it accelerates, more and more potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. By the time the train reaches the bottom of the hill, most PE has turned into KE. However, as the next hill starts, the train starts losing KE, slowing it down and building PE back up as it climbs.

Name one good insulator and one good conductor

Answer varies

Examples of insulator: styrofoam

Examples for conductor: metal

Name 3 types of renewable energy

Solar energy, wind energy, water energy

What are the types of energy changes that occur in the following: Make popcorn using a microwave in your house and then eat it.

Hint: There are 6 different types

Mechanical --> Electric --> Thermal --> Radiant --> Sound --> Chemical Potential
