What is a food chain?
Groups of producers and consumers that interact in a special way.
200
What is a producer? Name one example.
A living thing that makes its own food. Plants.
200
What category of consumers would you place a sheep in? Explain your answer.

What category of consumers would you place a wolf in? Explain your answer.
carnivore. It eats only meat.
200
What category of consumers would you place a bears in? Explain your answer.
Omnivore. It eats plants and animals.

Explain how a food chain works?
A consumer eats a producer. The producer pass energy to the consumer. The consumer may then become prey for another consumer. The prey passes energy to the predator.

Explain the difference between a prey and predicator. Use two different methods to explain your answer.

If a part of the food web was removed, do you think other parts would continue to function normally or change? Justify your answer.
Other parts would change. Prairie dogs made homes on grassy plains. Cattle began to feed on these plains. This reduced the habitat for prairie dogs. Many prairie dogs got sick and died. Prairie dogs were reduced. The cattle had more food. Ferrets ate the prairie dogs so they had less. Ferrets began to die. Other animals such as foxes and eagles depended on prairie dogs had to find other areas with food to survive.

What happens in a food chain? Explain your answer using illustrations and words.
Energy moves from one type of living thing to another.
400
Do all living things have the ability to make their own food? Justify your answer.
No. They must get their energy from somewhere else. This may be from the food they eat.
400
Are food webs different from food chains? justify your answer.

Why are trees in competition with each other? What might they be competing for?
They need to survive. All trees are different sizes, so they are competing for sunlight.
400
Explain what competition means? Provide an example of competition.
When two or more living things need the same resources. Small trees and large trees.
400
What types of things might living things compete for? What happens to individuals who are competing?
light, food, water, and living space; The winners survive, the losers may not survive.
500
How is energy transferred to living organisms? Provide an example of energy being transferred to living organisms.
By the food they eat. The plant gets energy from the sunlight. The animal eats the plant and gets energy. Another animal eats that animal to get energy.
500
What traits do you think might help a lion compete for prey?
speed, strength, sharp teeth, or claws.
