What is Kinetic Energy?
The energy of motion.
What is the unit for Energy?
Joule
What is potential energy?
Energy that is stored and ready to be turned into kinetic energy.
Based on your knowledge of Potential energy, what would a graph of Energy vs. Mass look like?
Straight increasing line: As mass increases, energy increases.

If a 1000 kg car is traveling at 3 meters per second, what is its kinetic energy?
4500 J
What is the equation for Kinetic Energy?
(1/2)mv2
What are the two main types of energy?
Kinetic and Potential Energy
What is the equation for potential energy?
mgh
If a moving object tripples it's velocity, how much more energy will it have?
3^2 = 9 times more energy.
Where would a car traveling on a roller coaster have the most potential energy?
At the top
How does friction affect kinetic energy?
It decreases it.
What is Mechanical Energy?
The sum of potential and kinetic energy in an equation.
What is it called when potential energy is stored in a spring?
Elastic energy
If an object at 1 meter above the ground is suddenly moved to 8 meters above the ground, how much MORE energy will it have?
Gpe = m x g x h
Therefore it will have 8x more energy.
What would happen to the kinetic energy of an object if you doubled the mass?
The kinetic energy would double.
Is kinetic energy a vector or a scalar? why?
Scalar. A ball thrown to the right with 5m/s velocity has the same kinetic energy as a ball thrown down at 5m/s velocity.
Who discovered Energy?
James Prescott Joule
Explain the law that allows us to predict how fast an object will travel at the end of a long fall.
Energy, like matter, cannot be created or destroyed. So the amount of potential energy (start) must be equal to the kinetic energy (end).
This allows us to solve for velocity.
If a toy car has 100 J of energy to start with, but becomes 2x heavier due to added luggage and moves 3 times slower... what is the total ending energy due to its motion?
100 * .22 =22.22 J of energy.
If a plane was traveling at the same velocity as a bird, which would have the most kinetic energy (assuming the plane has more mass)?
Plane
If a 2kg ball is traveling at 4m/s, what is its kinetic energy?
16J
What is the measure of energy transfer that occurs when an object is moved over a distance by an external force?
work
If a spring is stretched 10cm two different times(total of 20cm), why isn't the stored energy the same each time it is stretched?
It takes more force to stretch an already stretched spring.
On a graph of Energy Vs Velocity, what is the shape of the graph?
An exponential increase. As v increases, energy is increased by velocity's square.
Becky throws a football. It has a kinetic energy of 6 joules and potential energy of 10 joules. The football's mechanical energy is----?
16J
