What factors determine how much kinetic energy something has?

Mass and Speed

100

Which energy is the energy of motion?

Kinetic Energy

100

What is the difference between energy transformations and energy transfers?

Transformations: changing or converting from one type of energy to another

Transfers: energy moving from one object to another

100

Which object has more thermal energy: a large pot of water or a small cup of water at the same temperature?

Large pot of water

200

What factors determine how much gravitational energy something has?

Elevation and Mass

200

Which energy is stored energy?

Potential (gravitational)

200

Describe the energy transformations of a pendulum.

GE-->GE + KE --> KE --> KE + GE --> GE

200

How does sound travel?

Sound travels by particles vibrating, passing that on to the next particle; in a wave

300

What factors determine how much elastic energy something has?

Hardness (rigidity), deformation (compression), stretching

300

Which energies are types of kinetic energy?

Thermal, sound, light, electrical (mostly)

300

Describe the energy transformations and transfer of a bouncing basketball.

GE transforms into KE as it falls; when it hits the ground the KE transforms into Elastic and Thermal Energy; it also transfers energy to the air and the floor

300

In which medium does sound travel the fastest?

Solid

400

What factors determine how much thermal energy something has?

Mass and Temperature

400

Which energies are types of potential energy?

Elastic, gravitational, chemical

400

Describe the energy transformations on a roller coaster.

GE before it starts/goes down the hill; as it goes down the hill the GE transforms into KE; as it goes back up a hill it gains GE again; continuing with a combination of both GE and KE until it comes to a stop

400

What is the law of conservation of energy?

Energy cannot be created or destroyed

500

What factors determine how much chemical energy something has?

Mass and Material of Substance

Describe light energy.

light energy can be thought of as both a type of energy and a mechanism for transferring energy from one place to another. Light energy is a type of energy that is emitted by a light source, just as sound energy is emitted by a guitar string. When light is absorbed, its energy is transferred to the object absorbing it where it appears as a different type of energy. In the examples shown so far in class, light energy was transformed into KE, CE, or TE when it was absorbed.

Describe the energy transformations on a skate ramp.

GE at the top of the ramp, transforms from GE to KE as you go down the ramp; maximum KE at the bottom

500

Why doesn’t a basketball return to its original height when bouncing?

The energy is transferred to the air particles (it loses energy to the air)
