Your textbook describes 3 characteristics of scholarly sources. The 1st was being published in a reputable academic journal and the 2nd was being authoritative/written by a subject matter expert. This was the 3rd, and arguably most important characteristic.

It's a factual statement, but a good thesis needs to be a claim/debatable.

We haven't directly covered this in class, but might know that you should not be citing tertiary sources in your papers (encyclopedic sources like Wikipedia, etc). However, if you are having trouble finding quality primary sources that you can cite, tertiary sources can be helpful, as you can use them in this way.
What is finding primary sources from the works-cited/references page of tertiary sources?
We haven't covered this yet, but intuitively, it makes sense that we generally ignore/avoid this rhetorical appeal, as will primarily use other appeals in our argumentative writing.
