The winner takes it all system: The candidate with the most votes in each state take all electoral votes of said state. There are 528 electoral votes in total, and in order to become president you need at least 270 of these. The system essentially means that you do not need to win the popular vote in America to become president only the electoral.
Most states are traditionally either Democrat or Republican but some are so called swing states in which the result of the vote differs from election to election.
