What is an engineer?
People who design and build things to solve problems.
What does it mean to fail forward? or "failing forward"?
when someone learns from their mistakes and keeps trying
The first model built to solve a problem.
PROTOTYPE
During this step in the engineer design process. You need to identify your success criteria or checklist.
Design Your Solution
What is the 1st step of the engineering design process?
DEFINE THE PROBLEM
A condition of value that can be changed or measured.
A variable
This is the variable you change in an experiment.
Independent Variable
The standards that help an engineer measure how well their design does its job.
Criteria
What are constraints?
limitations, things that hold an engineer back
This is what you are measuring in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
Why do we identify variables?
Because changing them can change the outcome or result of a solutions
What does a good solution have?
A criteria so that you know if your solution solved the problem effectively
What does it mean to evaluate your solution?
to think about what was done right and wrong after testing it
Name 2 types of engineers.
Aerospace Electrical Engineers
Agricultural Environmental
Automotive
Civil: build building, bridges etc
Biomedical
What is one question an engineer tries to solve?
What is the problem?
Who has the problem?
Why is it important to solve the problem?
What is an example of a good hypothesis?
Must have If, then structure.
"If I water my plant with juice then it will not grow well.'
Name and describe an invention that solved a problem.
Teacher will decide
Why is Audri (Rube Goldberg Machine: Monster Trap) a good model of a positive attitude?
Because he expected failure and embraced it and learned from it. He never gave up.
If I use juice to water my plant then it will grow more.
What is the Independent Variable, the Dependent Variable? Name 1 control.
IV: Juice vs Water
DV: plant growth
Control: amount of light, location, temperature in room, plant type/seed type, amount of soil
What are control variables and why are they important?
Things that stay the same in an experiment. They are important to make sure results of a problem are clear and not skewed.
What was the problem that the building of the Golden Gate Bridge Solved?
people had to use a boat to get in and out of San Francisco
Why should an engineer always have a positive attitude?
So they will not be discouraged, so they can make the best possible solutions & know that they should always keep trying.
Give me an example of an experiment. Tell me what the IV and DV would be in it.
Teacher will decide.
Name 2 problems that have been solved by engineers. Explain.
Teacher will decide
What are the 7 steps of the EDP (Engineering Design Process)? (In your notes!)
1) Define a problem
2) Do your research
3) Develop possible solutions
4) Design your solution
5) Build a prototype
6) Test It
7) Evaluate Your Solutions
