What is author's purpose?

What is a sonnet?
the author's attitude toward his subject
What is tone?
the perspective from which a story or narrative is told
What is point of view?
two literary devices that both make a comparison
What are similes and metaphors?
two types of methods an author uses to reveal character traits and personalities
What is direct and indirect characterization?
the repetition of similar sounding words, occurring at the end of lines in poems or songs
What is rhyme?

the introduction of a character or event that starts the action of a story
What is the inciting incident?
a reference in literature to a person, place, or idea that has cultural significance
What is an allusion?
text that is usually factual; purpose is to explain, inform, argue, describe (rather than entertain)
What is nonfiction?
the voice used by an author to tell a poem (should not be automatically equated with the author)
What is the speaker?
the feeling the reader is supposed to feel based on the author's diction
What is mood?
two types of conflict
What are external and internal conflict?
A statement that seems to be contradictory, but contains a truth
What is a paradox?
a short and interesting story, or an amusing event, often used to support or demonstrate some point
What is an anecdote?
rhyming pattern, meter, grammar, and imagery used by a poet to convey meaning
What is the structure of a poem?
the author's way of writing that is unique to him or her
What is author's style?
