Parts of an Essay
A group of at least 3-5 sentences that comprise the main parts of an essay
What is a paragraph
This should be done with every essay before its turned in. You can go to the Writing Center to get it.
What is feedback/peer review?
Many students use this too much in their essays. It is when a writer retells the plot of a book.
What is summarizing?
This is the kind of essay we will write for essay 2.
What is a TED talk analysis?
This is the Citation Style we use in English 100.
MLA Citation
This is the part of the essay where you wrap up everything you discussed so far.
What is a conclusion?
This is an organizational tool used to get each of your main points on paper before you write. It looks like a numbered list or bullet points.
What is an outline?
This is what you do when you try to read the assigned reading or study right before the test.
What is cramming?
Essay 2 is due during this week.

This is the part of an essay that grabs your readers attention.
What is a hook?
This is usually the first step in the writing process and one of Mike's favorite things to do. To do this, all you have to do is get your thoughts on paper.
What is Brainstorming/freewriting
This is the word we use for copying someone else's work with out citing it properly.

What is Pronto?
This kind of sentence lets your reader know what the paragraph will be about.
What is a topic sentence?
This is technically a reading strategy that students use before they start writing. It has to do with writing notes in a book or underlining certain words and phrases to review later.
What is annotation.
It comes at the end of the paper, and we don't want to forget to add it. Otherwise, we won't know where our source material came from.
What are Works Cited/Citations?
This is the last day to drop the course with a W.

What is active reading?
This is the main argument of your essay. It's usually found at the end of the introduction.
What is a thesis statement?
It's important to do this when writing a paper. Otherwise, the ideas won't flow logically, and it may be hard to read.
What is organize?
This is the word for putting of an assignment until later when you have the time to start now.
What is procrastinate?
A type of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner.
What is an expository essay?
