The Shepherd
It happened on the night of December 24, 1957.
I was flying home to England. It was just a 60-minute flight from my airbase in Germany. I checked my compass and the oil. Excellent. The compass was fine and I had enough oil for about eighty minutes of flying.
Thirty minutes later, I suddenly saw that my compass was going crazy. But I had no fear. At least I had my radio. I could call the control tower. They could tell me how to land. I pressed SEND. Nothing. My radio was not working either.
I slowed down. I checked the oil again. I had fifty minutes of oil.
From the sky, I could see the lights of the towns far away on the coast of England. I could fly to Hayes Airbase. I could fly low and get their attention.
Then I saw it. A pilot's biggest concern. Fog. Now I had no radio, no compass, and no way to see anything. If was fifty minutes after take-off. I only had thirty minutes of oil. I was in serious trouble.
How many minutes into the flight did the pilot realize his compass wasn't working?
30 minutes

Suddenly I saw a grey shape moving through the clouds. It was a plane flying towards me! My shepherd! It was an old plane, a "Mosquito". I saw the letters JK on the side of the plane. The pilot was so close that we could see each other's faces.
I held up my left hand and showed five fingers. The five fingers meant that I had only five minutes of oil. He understood. I flew beside him. After two minutes he pointed down. I checked the oil. Almost zero. Please hurry, I thought. He turned the plane into the fog. I followed.
Two minutes later, the pilot pointed a finger at me and then down. It meant "You can land". I looked down and I saw lights. A field! I flew down. BUMP! The plane landed. Suddenly my plane went quiet. It had run our of oil. What a night!

I climbed out of the plane. Suddenly I heard a voice.
"Amazing! How did you find this place? My name is Dave Jones. I work here."
"My radio and compass stopped working. I didn't have any oil. I flew short triangles and Hayes Airbase sent a shepherd to show me the way."
"Amazing. There's no control tower here, no radio, nothing. We just work on planes now."
"This isn't Hayes Airbase?"
"No, this is Rushton Airbase. I heard a noise and I came outside. I turned on the lights and here you are.
Now I understood what had happened. This man didn't know about the shepherd that came from Hayes Airbase to help me. He just heard my plane and turned on the lights, and I landed here by mistake.
"Can I use the phone, please?" I asked. "I want to inform Hayes Airbase that I landed. They are waiting for my plane. I also want to find my shepherd to thank him."
Dave Jones said, "Sure, come in." We went into the office and I called Hayes Airbase.
"Hayes Airbase" a man answered. I told him everything.
"You're wrong. said the man. "We closed at five this afternoon. Everybody went home. We didn't know about your plane. Are you sure the plane was a mosquito? We stopped flying Mosquitos a long time ago. Most of them are in museums now."
"Yes, I'm sure it was a Mosquito. Thank you, anyway."
So Hayes Airbase didn't send me a shepherd, My shepherd was just a pilot with an old plane. How could I find him and thank him?

"Who's the pilot in the picture?" I asked Dave Jones.
"That's John Kane. He was here during the war, when this place was a real airbase. He was the best. He used to go out and look for lost planes. He always brought them back here to Rushton. John could fly through fog so think you coulsn't see you hand."
Dave continued, "John always said, 'Every time there's a plane up there in the night, trying to get back, I go out and bring him home.'"
I said to Dave, "That's the man who brought me here tonight."
Dave Jones looked at me in shock. "I don't think so. John went on his last flight on December 24, 1943. He never came back. John and his place crashed somewhere over the North Sea."
