What is the difference between naturalism and realism?

Realism is a literary movement that emerged in the mid-19th century and sought to portray life as it is, without idealization or romanticism. Realist writers depict everyday life, ordinary people, and common events in a straightforward and unembellished manner. Their works often address social issues, class struggles, and the effects of industrialization on society. Realism aims to capture the complexities and contradictions of human experience with nuance and detail.

On the other hand, naturalism is a more extreme form of realism that emerged in the late 19th century and was influenced by scientific theories such as Darwinism and determinism. Naturalist writers sought to depict life as a series of natural forces and external influences that shape individuals' fates. Naturalist literature often focuses on the darker aspects of life, such as poverty, violence, and the struggle for survival. Characters in naturalist works are often portrayed as helpless victims of their environment or heredity, unable to change their circumstances.

Hint:
Had the Queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty’s jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.
