IDENTIFY
Language used to make comparisons but not taken literally. Examples include: similes, metaphors, and personification
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
A note, comment, suggestion, question surrounding the text to help better analyze it.
ANNOTATIONS
Words or phrases that transition my thinking. Next example, counter example, new thought, etc.
TRANSITIONS
To break down something into its parts and examine it
ANALYZE
Properly giving credit to a source
CITING EVIDENCE/CITATION
A struggle with some other force--can be either internal or external.
CONFLICT
A statement about a topic that makes an argument that will be defended using evidence and logical reasoning.
CLAIM
How an author/person/character views/sees something; can be informed by your upbringing and environment or traits
PERSPECTIVE
To draw conclusions from reasoning based on evidence
INFER
Putting the MAIN IDEAS in your own words: only hits major points, not every detail
SUMMARIZE
The author's or character's attitude towards something or someone.
TONE
The opposing/opposite argument that could be made about the topic that is to be refuted (defeated) to improve your own claim/argument.
COUNTERCLAIM
Has a claim with reasons to support that are defended and supported with evidence (cited) in body paragraphs; also has a counterclaim that is refuted or defeated
ARGUMENT
Information that surrounds what’s being talked about within a certain topic to help determine the meaning of a word, phrase, or idea.
CONTEXT
To explain the meaning of in your own words
INTERPRET
Specific words or phrases to get across the author's or character's attitude.
DICTION
The reason why something has to be done/accomplished/exist/written
PURPOSE
The ideas or words that are invoked or implied beyond its literal meaning; feelings or ideas implied by words, NOT the literal meaning.
CONNOTATIONS
To make something known/get across info or make something understandable to someone
CONVEY
Putting a passage or text in your own words: usually point by point
