A short word or phrase that suddenly and briefly expresses an emotion or reaction—e.g., oh, wow, ahem.
What is an interjection?
A noun or noun phrase that identifies or modifies the noun or pronoun that comes immediately before it—e.g., Joey, my boyfriend, wanted pizza.
What is an appositive?
Comparing two unrelated things to creating new understanding and meaning. They are marked by the use of "like," "as,"or "such as." (Ex. She ran like the wind.)
What is Simile?
Words, phrases, or events that hint or suggest to the reader what's going to happen in the story.
What is foreshadowing?
Renames or describes the subject, and therefore is usually a noun, pronoun, or adjective.
What is a subject complement?
The part of a clause that tells what the subject does, what is done to the subject, or what is being said about the subject.
What is a predicate?
An -ed or -ing verb form used as an adjective or to form the progressive aspect or perfect tense.
What is a participle?
Words whose sound mimics natural sounds or sounds of an object. These words help bring the reader into the scene by working on the senses. (Ex. Bang! Flutter. Buzzzzz! Hum.)
What is an onomatopoeia?
This is one of the easiest go-to devices to use. Alliteration involves the quick repetition of the first letters, and therefore the first sounds, of words. (Ex. The white witch wanted to write a new spell.)
What is an alliteration?
Sentence combines at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
