What is the difference between a Topic and a Theme?

  • Theme: A theme is a deeper, more abstract idea or message that the author conveys through the story. It takes the topic and transforms it into a statement about life or human nature. Themes are often universal truths that provide insight or commentary on the human experience. For example, if the topic is "friendship," the theme might be "true friendship requires sacrifice and understanding."
