Harry the Dirty Dog By Gene Zion Harry was a white dog with black spots who like everything, except… getting a bath. So one day when he heard the water running in the tub, he took the scrubbing brush… and buried it in the backyard. Then he ran away from home. He played where they were fixing the street and got very dirty. He played at the railroad and got even dirtier. He played tag with other dogs and became dirtier still. In fact, he changed from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots. Although there were many other things to do, Harry began to wonder if his family thought that he had really run away. He ran back home. When Harry got to his house, he sat looking at the back door. The family looked out and said, “There’s a strange dog in the backyard… by the way, has anyone seen Harry?” When Harry heard this, he tried very hard to show them he was Harry. He started to do all his tricks. He flip-flopped. He rolled over and played dead. He danced and he sang. But everyone said, “Oh no, it couldn’t be Harry.”Harry gave up and walked toward the gate, but suddenly he stopped. He ran to a corner of the garden and started to dig. Soon he jumped away from the hole barking. He found the scrubbing brush! And carrying it in his mouth, he ran into the house. Up the stairs he dashed, with the family following close behind. He jumped into the bathtub and sat up begging, with the scrubbing brush in his mouth, a trick he certainly had never done before. “This little doggie wants a bath!” cried the little girl, and her father said, “Why don’t you and your brother give him one?” Harry’s bath was the soapiest one he’d ever had. It worked like magic. As soon as the children started to scrub, they began shouting, “Mummy! Daddy! Look, look! Come quick!” “It’s Harry! It’s Harry! It’s Harry!” they cried. Harry wagged his tail and was very, very, very happy. His family combed and brushed him lovingly, and he became one again a white dog with black spots. It was wonderful to be home. After dinner, Harry fell asleep in his favorite place, happily dreaming of how much fun it had been getting dirty. 1. Which of the following completes the flow chart Harry didn’t like taking baths.  ______________  Harry got dirty by running all over town  Harry missed his family and went home.  The family cleaned him and finally recognized him. a. Harry sat outside the house watching his family through the window. b. Harry did tricks for his family. c. Harry hid the scrub brush and ran away. d. Harry was happy to be home.

My daughter brought a note home. I looked at the note and smiled. “So we will have a recycling center,” I said. She started to explain why it is important to recycle. “I know,” I said, “but I don’t have time.” She set up a bag in the kitchen. She said it would be for plastic. Once a month we would take the plastic to the Recycle Center. It seemed like a good idea. But then the bag got full. In one week we had filled it with empty plastic bottles. I told my neighbor about this. She liked the idea. She started keeping her plastic in a bag. We all went together to the Recycle Center on the first Saturday. We brought our plastic. “Now that we have this center, it is easier to recycle,” said my neighbor. When we were walking back from the Recycle Center, I saw a change. The street was cleaner. Most days I see trash in the street. People litter. But there was no litter today. My daughter said that another class had “adopted” the street to clean. What is the main idea? a. The main idea is that recycling will save the planet. b. The main idea is that it is important to give back to your community. c. The main idea is that the daughter teaches her mom how recycling can help make the neighborhood cleaner. d. The main idea is that the neighbor is a good friend and goes with them to recycle.
