What is Volcano?
A weak spot in the crust where magma comes to the surface.
100
What determines whether an explosion is quiet or explosive?
Silica Content
100
What type of eruption forms a cinder cone volcano?
Explosive
100
What are the 3 stages of a volcanoes life?
active, dormant, and extinct
100
What's the difference between Lava and Magma?
Magma is inside the earth, when it breaks the surface we call it Lava.
200
Where are most volcanoes found?
Along spreading and colliding boundaries
200
Name all the parts of a volcano
Magma Chamber, pipe, vent, side vent, crater
200
What are the 4 LANDFORMS made from Lava and Ash?
Volcanoes: shield, cinder cone, composite, Lava Plateau
200
What are the four major geological features formed from Plate movement in CA?
Faults, Volcanoes, Mountain Ranges, and Basins
200
How is a volcanic neck formed?
When the magma cools inside the pipe, then the surrounding volcanic mountain erodes aways, leaving the harded igneous rock exposed.
300
Name the belt of volcanoes found around the Pacific Ocean along plate boundaries
Ring of Fire
300
What is Pyroclastic Flow?
A type of eruption that hurls out a mixture of hot gases, ash, cinders and bombs.
300
Describe how a caldera is formed.
When an explosion is so massive, that the magma chamber empties...part of the volcano "implodes" or collapes leaving a huge hole .
300
What is it called when many layers of thin, runny lava build up a high level area?
A lava plateau
300
When volcanoes form along converging oceanic plate boundaries, what is this called?
island arc
400
What is a HOT SPOT Volcano, and give an example.
This type of volcano forms when material deep with in the mantle gets very HOT, causing magma to rise and break through the crust. Not at a plate boundary. Hawaiin islands are examples.
400
What forms when water deep underground is heated by a nearby body of magma, or hot rock--collecting in a natural pool?
A hot spring
400
Name the 4 landforms created when Magma cools inside the earth.
Volcanic Neck, dike, sill, and batholith
400
Which plates collide to create Mt. Shasta and Lassen Peak?
Juan de Fuca and North American Plate
400
Compare and contrast a Dike with a Sill. What do they have in common, and how are they different?
Both are igneous intrusions. Dike cuts vertically across existing layers, while a sill squeezes inbetween the horizontal layers.
500
Explain what causes a volcanic eruption.
Heat from the interior of the earth, builds up, breaks through a weak spot in the crust. Magma fills the magma chamber, and then because of the intense heat, the gases in the magma "want to spread out- escape" This causes the magma to rise up the pipe- and with the increased pressure, eruption occurs.
500
What's the difference between Pahoehoe and Aa?
Pahoehoe is HOTTER and therefore runs faster and is thinner. Aa is cooler, thicker and slower lava.
500
What's a batholith?
Forms when a huge amount of magma cools in the earth's crust. The massive rock that forms underneath the Sierra Nevadas.
500
How was the Central Valley in California formed?
When the Sierras and the coastal mountains were created from colliding boundaries, often plate movement causes the crust to warp or bend downward. This is what makes a basin (the Central Valley).

Los Angeles lies on the Pacific Plate, San Jose lies on the North American Plate...How will the distance betweent the two cities change over millions of years?
The distance will increase as the Pacific Plate moves northwest relative to the North West relative to the North American Plate.
