When prices of stock began to fall, people rushed to sell their stocks before their value fell any further. So many stocks were sold that their value crashed, or became worthless.

They made warships in the shipyards there. The ships then made their way down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River and then out to the Gulf of Mexico where they could get to the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean.

What was the depression's effect on banks? What happened to people's money in the banks? (must answer both parts to get the points)
The banks had loaned money to so many people that when the depression occurred, people could not pay their loans back on time. The banks had no insurance for their depositor's money, and the banks failed or went out of business and the people lost all their money that they thought was safe in the banks.

How do we end a depression?
People need to have jobs so they have money to spend. Spending money allows the government to collect money through taxes. Businesses earn more and can make more products and bring more workers back to jobs.

Today, people's money is insured. If a bank is robbed, if it fails and closes, depositors won't loose their money. The FDIC will guarantee that they can get all of their money.

Explain what the WPA was and how it could help end the depression.
The Works Progress Administration was a government run jobs program designed to bring unemployed Americans back to work on public construction projects. It led to more people working and spending money. It created the need for jobs in non-government businesses as well.

Why did some goods need to be rationed during the war?
The military needed large amounts of food and supplies. Their needs created shortages of meat, sugar, fuel and other products at home. In order for there to be enough of these for the military forces fighting in Europe and Asia, the government limited the amounts of these products that people at home could purchase.

Who was Ernie Pyle and why was he so popular among Americans?
Ernie was an American journalist who wrote "human" stories about the soldiers during the war. He was from Dana, Indiana and is one of Indiana's true Hoosier Heroes. People loved his columns because he wrote about the lives of the soldiers as well as about the battles.

What is Mrs. Kremer's connection to Pearl Harbor?
Her father-in-law, Mr. Albert Kremer, was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He was stationed at Hickam Air Field above the harbor. He was walking back to the base after Mass when the Japanese planes came directly overhead and bombed his base before bombing the naval ships in the harbor. He spent 3 days in an artillery trench (his post) watching for any returning Japanese planes.
