The sentences say there is light coming through the window, so the reader can figure out that it is daytime. The window suggests that Rick is in a building.Rick sees trees moving outside, so the reader can figure out that the action takes place where trees grow. The author says Rick is thinking of taking a hike, so the setting is a place where taking a hike is possible. Also, the sentences say that he might take the hike before dinner, so it is probably around 5 or 6.

The cause is that his laces became loose on one of his skates. The effect is that he lost control, ran into another skater, and fell down.

The author doesn't tell you their relationship, so the reader must figure it out from their actions. They seem to like each other. Jill seems generous to Anna because she gives Anna an apple. They laugh together, like friends do. It seems as thought Jill and Anna are friends.

Read the title, bold and underlined words, captions, pictures, diagrams, and the questions. Then read the story twice.

Read the following sentences and determine the meaning of the word reluctant based on context clues: Sam was reluctant to be in the play, so he told the director that he was too busy to rehearse and didn't go to tryouts. He felt too shy to get up on a stage.
In the first example sentence, the words "too busy" show that Sam made an excuse about why he couldn't be in the school play. The sentence also says that he "didn't go to tryouts". The second example sentence says "He felt too shy to get up on stage". Reluctant means "not willing".

Determine if there is a synonym and antonym for the word "silly" in the following sentence: Danny was so silly that his teacher had to keep reminding him to be serious and stop fooling around.
Danny's teacher reminds him to "stop fooling around". The sentence also says that Danny "was so silly". The reader can tell from context clues that a synonym of silly is fooling around. The teacher also tells Danny "to be serious". The reader can figure out that serious means the opposite of silly. So "serious" is an antonym of "silly".
