The oldest recorded Greek riddle is the famous riddle of the
Sphinx of Thebes, which was solved by Oedipus:
What walks on four legs in the morning,
on two in the afternoon,
and on three in the evening?
What is MAN?
For man crawls on all fours as a baby in the
morning of his life, walks on his two legs in the afternoon of his life, and in the evening of his life hobbles with a stick, so that he then could be said to have three legs.
