This theme of The House on Mango Street is demonstrated most clearly when Sally is continually beaten by her father and yet chooses to stay with him because he provides for her; it is further demonstrated when Sally gets married to escape her father, only to gain a husband who also gets angry and threatens her
What is the cyclical nature of abuse?
This literary device is used when something happens or is said in a narrative that is the opposite of what the audience expects; it can also occur when the audience of a play knows information that characters on the stage do not.

The original goddess, known in other cultures as "Mother Earth"; she married Uranus and bore him twelve Titan children who she eventually helped to overthrow their wicked father
