POETRY
a group of lines arranged together in a recurring pattern of metrical lengths and a sequence of rhymes
What is stanza?
hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words
What are context clues?
the maximum amount of characters on your essay

What is SLEEP!
This type of poetry does NOT have a regular rhythm, meter, or pattern of rhyme.
What is Free Verse?
the central point or thought of the entire text
What is main idea?
a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay
What is the thesis statement?
a group of words that is not a complete sentence
What is a fragment?
I will do this so I won't be hungry during the test.
What is eat breakfast and bring a snack?
the use of this device allows the reader to visualize what is happening in the poem
What is imagery?
reason for or intent in writing
It may be to entertain the reader, to persuade the reader, or to inform the reader.
What is author's purpose?
this must be included in your introduction paragraph and restated in similar words in your conclusion
What is a thesis statement?
an effective way to clarify the meaning of a sentence or essay
What is add details and use specific word choice?
If I feel tired and zoned out during the test, I will do this to help myself wake up.
What is take a break?
(go to the restroom, get water, do some jumping jacks in the restroom, etc.)
a literary device that repeats a speech sound in a sequence of words that are close to each other

a brief statement or account of the main points of the story, usually briefly covering the beginning, middle, and end

Reading the passage and questions carefully, reading the writing prompt carefully, checking over my work and not being in a rush

The main argument of an essay--It is the most important part of an academic paper. It defines the paper's goals, direction, and scope. It is supported by evidence.
(It starts with the letter C!)
