What is Photosynthesis?

The process where autotrophs (an organism that has the ability to make its own food) convert light energy into chemical energy, using sunlight.

100

What is Mitosis?

Its part of the cell cycle in which cells divide their nucleus and DNA.

100

What are some Human Impacts?

Air pollution, Acid Rain, Deforestation

100

What is genetics?

Genetics is the study of heredity, or passing characteristics from parent to offspring.

100

What is Cell Transport?

  • Particles move in response to a concentration gradient

  • Solutes = substance being dissolved (ex: sugar)
  • Solvent = Dissolver (ex: water)

200

Where does photosynthesis occur?

Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of plants.

200

What is Cytokinesis?

Its part of the cell cycle in which cells divide their cytoplasm and organelles.

200

What is a Renewable resource?

A type of natural resource that can be replenished or takes a rather short period of time for nature to produce to sustain the rate of consumption, example wind or water energy.

200

What is Meiosis?

A different type of cell division where gametes have half the number of chromosomes as the parents.

200

What is Diffusion?

A type of passive transport where molecules move from high concentration to low concentration without using energy.

300

What is Cellular Respiration?

Process by which Cells make ATP (energy) by breaking down organic compounds (food)

300

What are the four Stages of Mitosis?

Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase

300

What is Non-renewable Resources?

Natural resources that exist in fixed amounts and can be used up, examples include fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

300

What is Nondisjunction?

The failure of one or more pairs of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate normally during nuclear division, usually resulting in an abnormal distribution of chromosomes in the daughter nuclei.

300

What is Facilitated Diffusion?

a type of passive transport and diffusion where molecules move from high concentration to low concentration without using energy but with using a protein channel.

400

Where Does Cellular Respiration Take Place?

It actually takes place in two parts of the cell:

  • Starts in the cytoplasm

  • Moves to the mitochondria if oxygen is present.

400

What is Asexual Reproduction?

The process where 1 parent cell splits into 2 genetically identical individuals. This produces clones and there is no genetic variation.

400

What is the cause of Deforestation?

Human are removing trees to make room for new homes, using it for lumber, clear-cutting for agriculture, and expanding businesses/roads.

400

What is Incomplete Dominance?

  • Neither allele is dominant or recessive.

  • When heterozygous, a third blending intermediate phenotype appears.

  • Use two different letters, but ALL capital!

400

What is a Concentration Gradient?

  •  It's the difference in the amount of molecules on each side of the cell membrane.

  • It causes particles to move!

500

What are the 2 types of cellular respiration?

Aerobic Respiration and Anaerobic Respiration:

500

What are the Types of Asexual Reproduction?

  1. Budding

  2. Binary fission

  3. Sporulation

  4. Regeneration

  5. Vegetative Propagation

500

What are the effects of Deforestation?

Loss of habitat for animals (decreases biodiversity) and this upsets the carbon cycle. No photosynthesis to remove excess carbon. Also, increases erosion (loss of soil).

500

What is Codominance?

  • Both alleles are expressed and both contribute to the phenotype (both show up).

  • When heterozygous, both phenotypes are       represented separately.

  • Use two different letters, but ALL capital!

500

What is Dynamic Equilibrium?

When molecules are balanced and continue to move forward and backward across the membrane with chemical reactions happening simultaneously and constantly.
