What is Ecology?

Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment.

100

What is Protein Synthesis?

The process by which proteins are made.

100

What is Evolution?

Evolution is the scientific theory that explains how different species of organisms came from common ancestors.

200

What is a Food chain?

Food chains show a single path of energy transfer that can occur in an ecosystem.

200

What is DNA Replication?

Making an identical copy of a strand of DNA

200

What is Natural selection?

The theory that organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass on their adaptations to their offspring.

300

What are Trophic Level of Food chains?

300

What are the DNA Replication Steps?

1. Original DNA strand unzips Breaks hydrogen bonds between nucleotides

2. New DNA nucleotides are added to each old strand, matching complementary nitrogen bases.

(A to T, G to C)

3. Two semiconservative strands are created- each with half the old strand and half a new strand.

300

What is Reproduction isolation?

Anything that prevents members of a species from producing offspring with members of another population of that species.

400

What are the Levels of Organization?

Species, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biosphere

400

What is Transcription?

The process by which a strand of mRNA is assembled based on the section of DNA it needs to transport to the ribosome.

400

What is a Genetic variation?

Differences between members of the SAME species. Caused by mutations that produce new alleles for certain genes.

500

What are the types of Relationships in Ecology?

  • Feeding Relationships (Predator/Prey)

  • Competition

  • Symbiotic Relationships

500

What are the Steps of Transcription?

  1. DNA is “unzipped” by an enzyme

  2. mRNA nucleotides are brought to the DNA strand and matched to the DNA bases to build an mRNA strand.

  3. New mRNA strand leaves the nucleus and goes to the ribosome

500

What is Geographic isolation?

Any geographic barrier that keeps a population apart from other members of its species.
