What are the 3 types of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What is the difference between ABIOTIC and BIOTIC?
Abiotic- all of the NONLIVING parts of an ecosystem.
Biotic- all of the LIVING parts of an ecosystem.
Define runoff
water that flows downhill to rivers, streams, or lakes.
What is the difference between INHERITED and ACQUIRED traits?
You are born with inherited traits (eye, hair, skin color)
Acquired traits are products of your environment (scars, strong muscles)
Which body system breaks down food?
Digestive
What is volume?
The amount of space an object takes up
What type of biome do we have in Troutman, North Carolina?
A deciduous forest. This is a forest that contains trees that lose their leaves each year.
What weather tool would be best to predict upcoming weather changes?
Barometer. It measures the amount of air pressure
Baro=weight or pressure.
True or False:
Multicellular means more than one cell that perform different functions in an organism.
TRUE!
Examples of multicellular organisms: dog, humans, cows, plants
What is the difference between VOLUNTARY muscles and INVOLUNTARY muscles
Voluntary- you control them (using your biceps to carry a box)
Involuntary- they work automatically. You do not control them (Your heart beating)
True or False:
A physical change means that a new substance has been formed.
False! New substances are a result of chemical changes (baking, burning, rusting)
What does salinity mean?
The amount of salt something contains.
Explain the Water Cycle using the words evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and transpiration.
Water is EVAPORATED from lakes, rivers, oceans, and cools down in the atmosphere to CONDENSE into clouds. When the clouds have too much water vapor stored, it begins to PRECIPITATE back down to earth through rain, snow, sleet or hail. Transpiration occurs when water EVAPORATES through the leaves of a plant.
inherited
What function do the CIRCULATORY and RESPIRATORY systems have in common?
both move oxygen throughout the body
Explain the difference between MASS and WEIGHT
Remember the Earth vs. Moon example!
Where would I find an ESTUARY?
Near the coast. An estuary is a coastal body of water where fresh water from a river mixes with salt water from the ocean.
Name the 3 main types of clouds we learned about and describe them.
Cirrus- Featherlike and wispy
Cumulus- Big puffy clouds with a flat bottom (pile of cotton balls)
Stratus-blanket like, layer. (like fog)
Which kind of cell can survive on its own as an organism?
Unicelled or single celled organisms
amoeba, bacteria
A boy hears the starting whistle at the beginning of a race. Which body system makes sense of the noise and tells him to run?
The nervous system. Sends signals from your body to your brain.
Explain ONE of Newton's Laws.
1st law-Law of Inertia. An object at rest will stay at rest. An object in motion will stay in motion. UNTIL a force acts upon it.
2nd law- The GREATER the mass of an object, the more FORCE is needed to move it.
3rd law- For every action, there is an OPPOSITE and EQUAL reaction.
In what parts of the world would I find a taiga biome?
A large, naturally occurring area with largely occurring evergreen forest variation. (Northern Canada, Alaska, Russia, Norway)
Explain the difference between the JET STREAM and the GULF STREAM
The jet stream is a strong air current that moves across the US from west to east.
The gulf stream is a warm ocean current that starts in the Gulf of Mexico, and travels north up the east coast of the US through the Atlantic Ocean.
Find someone on your team with dominant traits, and someone with recessive traits
dominant (dark hair, eyes)
recessive (light hair, eyes)
What organ is in the same body system as the trachea?
Respiratory system: lungs, nose, mouth, bronchi, diaphragm)
