The removal of weathered material from one location to another
Erosion
Various sizes of unsorted sediment deposited by a glacier
Till or a Moraine
The layering down or settling of eroded material
Deposition
Layered sediment deposited by streams of water that flow from a melting glacier
Outwash
Processes that build up features on Earth's surface
Processes that tear down features on Earth's surface
Constructive and Deconstructive Processes
A current that flows parallel to the shoreline
Longshore Current
What is an example of a land feature created that is formed from a constructive force?
Volcanic eruption making new land from lava flows. Plate tectonic pushing together to form mountains.
A sharp peak formed when several glaciers descend from the top of the same mountain
Horn
The rapid downhill movement of soil, loose rocks, and boulders
landslide
An apron of sediment that forms where a stream flows from a steep, narrow canyon onto a flat plain at the foot of a mountain
Alluvial Fan
A broad, C-shaped curve in a stream
Meander
What is a destructive force that destroys land features?
Hurricanes provide strong winds that can blow away sediments or wash away beaches.
Volcanoes can blow a volcanic mountain apart.
Describe the 3 stages of stream development AND the features found in each stage.
Young: Water falls, steep slopes, rapids, water erodes the bottom of the stream or river. V-shaped valleys.
Mature: Gentler slopes, wider channels, water erodes the sides more than the bottom, U-shaped valleys, meanders start to form.
Old: Slower water, wider channel, meanders, empties into a larger body of water and may have deltas at the end of the old stream. Flat area.
When there are steep slopes, little vegetation, and rock is weak and crumbly.
More erosion occurs by mass wasting
Wind, water, and ice are examples of ___________.
