What is TIG and MIG welding? Describe it.
What can you connect these two things to respectively that students might be more familiar with?
(Do not need the full name of either, but if given both you get extra points!)
For MIG, filler metal is fed directly from the welding torch, so the heat source and metal are combined together. -> Extreme hot glue gun
For TIG, the welding torch and filler metal is independent from each other, so the heat source and metal is separate. -> Extreme soldering
Bonus Points: Metal Inert Gas & Tungsten Inert Gas
What are the specific military branches offered by the College of Engineering? Where is at least one of their services located?
Air Force, Space Force, and Army ROTC. They are located in CEB across the way from AEB. You see it on the tour!!! CDC-4 is where the Army is located.
What is a minor? Explain what is the difference between a minor and major?
A minor is an additional credential that a student can pursue that requires fewer credits to complete than a major. It can allow students to go further into a specific area of study aligned with their major or can be something in a completely different field a student holds interest in. The biggest difference is that minors are less credits (classes) than a major. You will be dipping your toes into the pool instead of entering the shallow end.
How many laser rooms do we have? Which professors use them and what’s their focus? Who uses the black light research room and what is his research?
3 dedicated laser rooms.
Dr. Zhao: Has an optical table to test lasers for micro/nano energy conversion (his focus).
Dr. Chen Huang also uses an optical table in room 337 AEB for fluid mechanics for aerospace and biomedical engineering (his focus).
A Ph.D. student Hamed, who is Dr. Khan’s student, uses the black light research room for water filtration and other environmental issues.

Competition Rocket: 12 ft tall, original was 6 ft; maximum apogee 10k ft. Level 1 Rocketry Workshop: teach students how to design and fabricate individual rockets.. Baja/Rebel Racing (Off-roading 4 wheel gas vehicle) and Formula Racing (On-roading electric vehicle).
What are the first year EED/ETD projects in order? Be descriptive! Be descriptive!
A project that every entertainment student must complete in their first class is a paper cube, a conceptual object out of thermoplastics, a foam core device to store said paper cube, a wooden device to store said foam core device. Then lastly, they must make an object of any material from a picture from the internet and only one known dimension.
What is the love story that we can talk about? How important are clubs to college students?
Two people met while on the ASCE Steel Bridge. They became friends then more. They actually got married later on. They built a steel bridge at their wedding. Crazy! They are continuing to work together to this day. College students are more likely to do well in their classes, graduate college, and get a job out of college when they get involved. Get to make friends and grow their resumes.
What are the four tracks for Entertainment Engineering and Design? What are the four tracks for Entertainment Technology and Design?
EED - Structural Engineering, Acoustics, Robotics, and Systems & Live Entertainment.

Who uses the tissue culture room and where is it located? What is being done in this room?
Dr. Marti and Dr. Khan and it is located on the 3rd floor of AEB (wet lab) and it is used for the biodegradation of organic contaminants and method development for measuring biodegradability and bioavailability of bulk contaminants in water and wastewater. Or removal of specific and bulk chemical contaminants from water and wastewater with a focus on process development.
What are the projects of ASCE? Describe them.
Steel bridge, make a 20 ft long steel bridge that carries 2,500 pounds that they must assemble the day of the competition (welded beforehand by the team). Concrete Canoe, design a concrete formula that allows the canoe to float and race against other colleges. Canoes are cut in half and put in the concrete canoe graveyard. Timber design, design a little wood house and make it aesthetically pleasing. Surveying competition.
Does the University of Nevada Las Vegas have a black box within the College of Engineering? If so, what is a black box and what is it used for?
Yes, the University of Nevada Las Vegas does have a black box. A black box is a room that is completely blacked out to allow for the space to be transformed into whatever may be needed for entertainment purposes. The black box is used to train students on the use and operation of theatrical equipment that is currently used within the industry. (May answer: The black box was recently used to perform an immersive seance that involved the customers within the show during the 7th annual Art Walk.)
Who is SAE? What are they known for?

Put the research projects in order as they appear in the slides. Give a one sentence summary of each project as well.
Decarbonize Steel and Iron Production, Hailey’s Hand (“RoboHand”), Robotics and Drones is the order they appear in the slides. A team of researchers from UNLV was given $2.1 million from the US Department of Energy to work on decarbonizing the domestic iron and steel production through electrowinning. Hailey was a little girl born with Poland syndrome, which made it hard for her to grip stuff, so her parents reached out to the COE to design and 3D print her a prosthetic to be cost effective. UNLV’s robotics lab has a humanoid robot that won $10 million in an international competition and we do a mentorship program with local high school’s FIRST robotics teams. Drone’s research has two aviaries, indoor and outdoor, which both are used to conduct research, and a wide range of drone types.
What are the types of engineering clubs that we have? Give two examples of each with full name and acronym, that are not the bolded ones from our presentation. Who can join these organizations?
Professional Development - SWE (Society of Women Engineers), NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), etc.
Major Specific - AMSE (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), TEA (Themed Entertainment Association), Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), etc.
Project Focus - UNLV Rebel Robotics, LayerZero, Nevada Water Environment Association, etc. Anyone who is interested can join Project Focus and Major Focus. Some of the Professional Development have rules to be members, like us (ESA).
What is the cleanroom? Be specific. What type of clean rooms do we have?
he cleanroom is a controlled environment located on the first floor of SEB. It has powerful HVAC systems and HEPA filters that help make sure the air is clean to not damage any of the equipment and materials. The cleanroom contains Class 10,000 and Class 1,000 rooms. Class 10,000 means that in a cubic feet there are no more than 10,000 particles of .5 microns. Class 1,000 means that there are no more than 1,000 particles of .5 microns, which is 10x cleaner than a standard operating room in a hospital. That is 200x smaller than the diameter of a human hair. These rooms are positively pressured, making them the only positively-pressurized room in all of SEB. The last Class 1,000 room in the cleanroom is a lithography room which is used to have more precise control over UV-B (ultraviolet with higher frequencies) usage for etching on microprocessors and computer chips. The lithography room is bathed in yellow light due to the lower frequency that prevents any damage to the materials.
What research is Zach doing with drones? Where is research being conducted?
Radiation drone detection for natural disasters through motion capture drone swarms to source and detect the exact radiation location. As well as manufacturing drone parts. His research is in the indoor aviary of TBE-B.
