The ____ is the first sentence. It sucks a reader in and builds interest. It is your first step in building exigence.
What is the Hook?
The opening paragraph that sets up the topic of the paper. This is also where you’ll deploy a hook, develop exigence, state the central claim, or thesis, and provide a map/methodology for your argument.
What is an Introduction
This is your answer to your research question. It is the main idea of the whole essay. As such, everything else you write will some how support and point back to this statement.
What is a Thesis
Typically the first sentence of the body paragraph that makes a claim as to what is being discussed in that paragraph. It will also form a smooth transition from the previous paragraph, either through a clear connection or the use of transitional phrases.
What is a Topic Sentence
Contains one or multiple of the following- Quote, Startling Fact, Narrative, Description, Metaphor/Simile, Strong Statement, or a Question.
What is a Hook and Line
The paragraphs between the Introduction and Conclusion that contain the evidence, explanation, analysis, research, etc. Each one should focus on one central idea that communicates an aspect of the thesis.
What is a body paragraph
Statements that are arguable; i.e. claims require evidence to support them. Multiple sub-claims should work together to support or to lay out and explain the thesis. Claims can be built on evidence from sources.
What are Claims and Subclaims?
Information and details that support your claims, usually drawn from scholarly sources or primary research. Every time you include a piece of this you'll cite it and provide a warrant.
What is Evidence
____ is the sense of urgency and importance. It answers the reader's questions of "why care?" Without it, you'll struggle to hook and sustain a reader's interest. You'll also typically find that it helps set up your thesis.
What is Exigence
When you provide a piece of evidence, you'll also need to include a ___, or reason why that evidence is included. How does it support your claim?
What is a Warrant
- a discussion of why the evidence and warrant you provide is the best for your particular case.
- further logical analysis and appeals.
- an anticipated counter-argument and rebuttal.
- a qualifying statement or phrase.
What is a Backing
Limit the claim to make it fit within the constraints of counterarguments that cannot be fully rebutted. This will often involve words that limit the strength of the claim, but they may also make fundamental changes to the claim/thesis by reducing its sphere of influence.
What is a Qualifier
Unless you developed the argument or evidence on your own (i.e. primary research), a ___ is required in order to avoid charges of plagiarism as a citation gives credit to the sources of your evidence.
What is a Citation
The final paragraph brings all the threads of your argument together in a coherent and pleasing way. To do this, it will review your argument, drive home your point/thesis, and leave the reader with a sense of resonance.
What is a Conclusion
____ is that important final thought. It is the thing that leaves your reader thinking about your writing and ideas long after they've put your paper away.
What is Resonance
An alphabetical list of the sources you used, organized by authors’ last names. In MLA this is called a Works Cited page while in APA this is known as a Reference page.
