A farmer has a fox, a chicken, and a bag of corn grain. He has a boat and needs to cross the river. He can only take one thing at a time in the boat. If he leaves the chicken and corn together, the chicken will eat the grain. If he leaves the fox with the chicken, the fox will eat the chicken.

  1. First Trip: The farmer takes the chicken across the river and leaves it on the other side. (Now, the fox and grain are safe together on the original side.)
  2. Second Trip: The farmer returns alone to the original side and takes the fox across the river.
  3. Third Trip: Upon reaching the other side, the farmer leaves the fox but takes the chicken back with him to the original side.
  4. Fourth Trip: The farmer leaves the chicken on the original side and takes the grain across the river to the far side, leaving it with the fox.
  5. Fifth Trip: Finally, the farmer returns alone to the original side one last time to get the chicken and brings it across the river.
