Discrimination
social norms, beliefs, art, laws, customs, religion and habits practiced over the course of generations that are associated with a group of people and place
Culture
the earliest known inhabitants of a place and especially of a place that was colonized by a now-dominant group
Indigenous
An idea that has been created and accepted by the people in a society.
Social Construct
the state of belonging to a social or cultural group that has a common heritage and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Ethnicity
A narrative in opposition to the master narrative that includes a diversity of points-of-view, histories and experiences of marginalized groups and people of color.
Counter Narrative
Unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power. The three I’s of oppression are an interrelated system
Oppression
Refers to our sense of who we are as individuals and as members of social groups. It also refers to our sense of how others may perceive and label us.
Identity
the country to which a person is a citizen, i.e. U.S. citizen, Mexican citizen, etc.
Nationality
The action of settling, taking control and appropriating a place and the Indigenous people of the area.
Colonization
An overly generalized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment.
Stereotype
The division of the human species into distinct groups of races is a social construct developed by European scientists and colonists in the 16th century to justify a racial hierarchy based on skin color and physical features, allowing for the enslavement and inhumane treatment of people of color. New genetic studies in the late 20th century refuted the existence of biogenetically distinct races.
Race
A dislike or aversion toward a person without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. These attitudes are usually based on negative views of a group of people or stereotypes that have been learned either through the media, previous generations, and/or negative experiences.
Prejudice
the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.
Empathy
the familiar story that America was settled by European immigrants, and that Americans are only white or of European ancestry. The master narrative normalizes the perspectives and points of views of European-Americans and places the narratives of people of color as the “Other” - different and inferior
Master Narrative
The belief in the superiority of one race over another. Racism manifests when power is used to deny access, rights, and/or opportunities to a particular group or person based on their racial background
Racism
to absorb into a cultural tradition of a population or group; occurs when the minority customs get lost into the majority systems and customs.
Assimilation
a system of social control and the normalization of oppressive ideas and practices that assert dominance over groups of people who don’t fit the image or representations of the dominant group
Hegemony
Is the belief that women deserve equal social, economic, and political rights and freedoms. Over the years, feminism has focused on issues like the right to vote, reproductive and sexual freedom, and equal pay. Feminism has also explored racism, gender norms, self-expression, and much more.
Feminism
the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or intersect especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups
