What is the mistake? How do you know?

Joe solved 9 x 34 below. What is his mistake? What should his answer be?

9 x 34 = 9 x (3+4)

          = (9 x 3) + (9 x 4)

          =  ( 27 )  +  ( 36 )

          =  63

When Joe decomposed the number he separated 34 into 3 + 4 instead of 30 + 4. His actual answer should be 306.

9 x 34 = 9 x ( 30 + 4 )

          = (9 x 30) + (9 x 4)

          =  ( 270 )  +  ( 36 )

          =  306

Liz starts at the number 3. She creates a pattern using the rule: Add 3. Complete the first six terms in Liz's pattern.

Will the 80th term in Liz's pattern be even or odd? Explain how you know.

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18

The 80th term will be even. All even terms are even numbers, and 80 is an even term.

Carlos solved 7 x 48 below. What is his mistake? What should his answer be?

7 x 48 = 7 x (40+8)

          = (7 x 40) + (7 x 8)

          =  ( 280 )  +  ( 49 )

          =  329

When Carlos multiplied 7 x 8 incorrectly. His product should've been 56, not 49. His actual answer should be 306.

7 x 48 = 7 x (40+8)

          = (7 x 40) + (7 x 8)

          =  ( 280 )  +  ( 56 )

          =  336

Find the error in Claire's reasoning and find the correct answer. (Claire's thinking is in italics)

The width of the rectangle is 6 cm. The length is 4 cm times as long as the width. What is the perimeter of the rectangle?

To find the perimeter I need to add all the sides together. I know the width is 6 and the length is 4. 6+6+4+4 or (2x6) + (2x4) = 20. The perimeter is 20 cm.

Claire didn't find the length of the rectangle correctly. The problem says it is 4 TIMES as along as the width, so she needed to do 4 x 6 to find the length. The actual length of the rectangle is 24. She should have done 6 + 6 + 24 + 24 OR (2 x 6) + (2 x 24).

The perimeter is 60 cm.

Find the error in Bob's reasoning and find the correct answer. (Bob's thinking is in italics)

The width of the rectangle is 7 cm. The length is 5 times as long as the width. What is the area of the rectangle?

To find the area I need to multiply the length by the width. The width of the rectangle is 7 cm. The length is 5 times as long or 7x5, so the length is 35 cm. I have to do 7 x 35 to find the area.

7 x 35 = 7 x (3 + 5)

           = (7 x 3 ) + (7 x 5)

           =  ( 21 )   + (  35 )

           =          56 centimeters squared

When Bob decomposed the number to multiply separated 35 into 3 + 5 instead of 30 + 5. His actual answer should be 306.

7 x 35 = 7 x ( 30 + 5 )

          = (7 x 30) + (7 x 5)

          =  ( 210 )  +  ( 35 )

          =  245 centimeters squared

The shape pattern is as follows:

Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle

If the pattern continues, what shape will be the 10th term?

What shape will be the 54th term?
