Evolution
RANDOM
Mrs. Adams
100

This term defines the change in a species over time.

What is Evolution?

100

True or false: Natural selection acts on the population and not the individual.

FALSE
NATURAL SELECTION ACTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL
EVOLUTION ACTS ON THE POPULATION

100

This naturalist published The Origin of Species and proposed many widely accepted ideas about evolution.

Who is Charles Darwin?

100

Define Speciation.

Emergence of a new species from an ancestral species.

100

What is my favorite colors?

Dark Green and Gold

200

This term defines a trait's effect on the ability of an individual to reproduce and survive.

What is Natural Selection?

200

Define genetic drift. What are two types of genetic drift?

Genetic drift: Change in allele frequencies in a population due to chance.

Types:

1. Founder Effect- Can result when a new population is formed by a few individuals.

2. Bottleneck Effect-Can result when a population size is drastically reduced.

200

This term is used to describe how species change over time but that divergent species share a common ancestor.

What is descent with modification?

200

Give an example of survival of the fittest.

Finches

200

When is my Birthday?

May 26th

300

All individuals of the same species inhabiting the same geographic area.

Population

300

What is a mutation and why is it significant? What are some consequences?

Mutation: Change in nitrogenous-base sequence of DNA

Significance-Production of new alleles (non-harmful mutations increase evolutionary potential)

Consequences-Most mutations are neutral or harmful

300

This mechanism is used on the individual level and pushes for evolution at the population level.

What is natural selection?

300

When is evolution possible?

If genetic variability (multiple alleles for at lease one gene) exists in a population.

300

Where do I attend college?

Bonus: +100 pts.

What is my major or minor?

USF

Major: Women and Gender Studies

Minor: Deaf Studies

400

According to the Biological Species Concept-group of individuals that are biologically capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.

Species

400

This evolutionary process takes place when individuals move between populations. This can increase genetic diversity in a population by adding alleles, but also increase genetic similarity between populations.

Gene Flow (Migration)

400

True or False: Differential success in reproduction will lead to a gradual change in species.

True: Traits that are favorable in the environment and allow an organism to survive and reproduce will be pass down to their offspring, eventually changing the species as traits are passed on.

400

Why is Natural Selection not completely random?

Individuals with characteristics that best fit the environment will survive and produce offspring (These offspring will then have traits from the surviving parents)

400

Where did I graduate from High School?

Dunedin High School

500

This term is used to describe an organisms ability to survive long enough to reproduce. It also describes the number of offspring produced by an individual relative to other members of the population.

What is fitness?

500
What is inbreeding depression? How is this caused by genetic drift?

Inbreeding depression- low average fitness in a population due to a high number of individuals that are homozygous for a defective allele.

Because genetic drift (either by a bottleneck or a founder), caused a random drop in individuals within a population, loss of alleles during one of these events can lead to the fixation of recessive alleles that will lead to inbreeding depression.

500

Which (if any) of these statements is false?

1. Populations of organisms do not change.

2. The earth does not change

3. All species originated at the same time and place

ALL OF THEM! These were the views of Western Culture before Darwin made his discoveries. We now know, based on evidence for evolution and the fossil record, that these claims are false.

500

Describe "survival of the fittest."

Organisms with the best traits for survival in their environment will live long enough to reproduce, thus passing the best traits for survival onto their offspring.

500

What are my three favorite animals?

Giraffes, Jelly Fish, Hammer Head Sharks
