There is a large amount of biodiversity throughout the world. According to the theory of natural selection, which of the following factors is primarily responsible for biodiversity?

 A. selective breeding
 B. invasive species
 C. environmental diversity
 D. deforestation

Environmental diversity is primarily responsible for biodiversity.

According to the theory of natural selection, individuals that have traits that enable them to survive in a given environment can reproduce and pass those traits to their offspring. It is the environment that determines what traits are beneficial to the individual. For every environment on Earth, there are different species that have developed traits suitable to their particular environment.

Anatomical structures, including homologous, analogous, and vestigial structures, can be used as evidence for biological evolution. What are homologous structures?

 A. structures that perform a different function than is expected
 B. structures with different evolutionary origins but similar functions
 C. structures with little or no function to the organism
 D. structures that are similar as a result of common ancestry

Homologous structures are structures that are similar as a result of common ancestry.

Analogous structures are structures with different evolutionary origins but similar functions.

Vestigial structures are structures with little or no function to the organism.

What is the oldest still running restaurant in Tallahassee?

Shell Oyster Bar

Does natural selection always favor the biggest / fastest?

Not always. Traits that increase survival and reproduction can be many things other than size and speed.

Explain the theory of endosymbiosis and give the evidence for it.

The mitochondria and chloroplast have their own DNA. It is believed that they may have been simple cells that were later engulfed by other cells and became organelles.

What did the Miller / Urey experiment show?

Organic material can come from inorganic material.

200

Give two properties that we think the first cells might have had.

Prokaryotic and anaerobic

This is a "Key Deer". The smallest deer in North America. They are only found in one place. Where is it?

Florida Keys

300

What is genetic drift?

A random event that changes allele frequency in a population. Typically lowers genetic diversity

300

What is fitness?

The ability to survive and reproduce

The scientific theory of evolution is supported by different types of evidence. The diagrams below show the skeletons of two different animal species. How does comparing the skeletons of these animals provide support for the scientific theory of evolution?

Possible common ancestry

400

Comparing embryos is a way to support what?

common ancestry

400

Which statement below most closely explains the link between jaw size and hominid evolution?

The jaws of hominids evolved to be smaller and less protruding over time.

What is this origin story for Mr. Freeze? What caused him to permanently need sub zero temperatures? What was his motivation?

1. The Classic Origin (DCAU / Modern Comics)

  • The Couple: Victor Fries was a brilliant, devoted cryogenicist who loved his wife, Nora, dearly.
  • The Illness: Shortly after they were married, Nora was diagnosed with a rare, terminal, and incurable disease.
  • The Solution: To stop her from dying, Victor used his expertise to place her in suspended animation (cryostasis), intending to keep her frozen until he could develop a cure.
  • The Accident: Ferris Boyle, the CEO of GothCorp funding the research, ordered the experiment shut down. In the ensuing confrontation, Victor was caught in an explosion of cryogenic chemicals.
  • The Transformation: The chemicals mutated Victor, making it impossible for him to survive outside of sub-zero temperatures. He created a suit to stay alive and turned to crime to fund his continued research into curing Nora.
  • Motivation: Every crime, and action Victor took as "Mr. Freeze" was driven by the goal of curing and awakening Nora.
