What is the main point of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences?

The main point of Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence is to rethink the way that we determine someone’s intelligence.

Based on what you know about critical thinking, which of the following students seems to be thinking critically?

a.  Emma evaluated the writer's argument and recognized the false assumption the writer was making

b.  Grace presented her dogmatic opinion about the value of the research and the conclusions of the study

c.   After the tennis match, Reid asked the line judge why she called the ball out when it was in.

d.  In chemistry class, Gil drew conclusions before finishing his experiment with the two substances

Emma evaluated the writer's argument and recognized the false assumption the writer was making

How does higher order thinking impact learning?

Higher order thinking impacts learning because it allows us to improve and grow as a person learns more and deeper.

Think of a time in your life where you experienced a challenge (personal or academic). Did you succeed or fail in this specific experience? Explain how your
success or failure illustrates accommodation, assimilation or disequilibrium.

A challenge I may face in college is balancing everything. My schema has adapted to this challenge because I’ve gathered resources and I have GRIT. I think this is assimilation because this is information I knew I just had to adjust my schedule.

Explain the difference between self-concept and self-esteem and describe how each relate to identity development.

Self-concept is the beliefs that we have, self-esteem is the respect or confidence we have in ourselves. They both relate to identity development because they play a role in our everyday lives on how we feel about ourselves.

200

What is the biggest problem with Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences?

There are too many ways that people can be intelligent. There is no way that you can get a full picture of someone’s intelligence from 8 specific categories.

In which of the following situations does Mr. Cannon scaffold learning?

  1. Mr. Cannon showed a brief video with a close-up demonstration of the detailed steps he had explained to the class

  2. Mr. Cannon assigned readings in the text about the period of history immediately following the Civil War in the US

  3. Mr. Cannon gave a student a choice between two actions: return to his seat quietly and immediately or stay after school

  4. Mr. Cannon divided students into groups to play their favorite game of trivial pursuit in history

Mr. Cannon showed a brief video with a close-up demonstration of the detailed steps he had explained to the class

Identify ways in which culture may influence learning in and out of the classroom.

Culture can change certain practices or beliefs. From how you see people, assumptions you make, and how you interpret information. Also things you learn may resonate or mean something different than to other people.

300

Explain disequilibrium in your own words and articulate the role it plays in the learning process. Then offer one specific study or classroom strategy you have used to resolve this in your learning process.

Disequilibrium is things that we don’t know so those things are scary and challenging.Disequilibrium refers to unsteadiness, imbalance, or loss of equilibrium, or not having balance within your life

300

Adolescence and early adulthood are especially important (and difficult!). Explain how these stages relate to self-concept and becoming a lifelong learner.

These stages relate because in these stages are when we develop the most. We begin to gain beliefs, and our main concepts of who we are, the world, and our purpose. What we learn in these years we will continue to use.

300

Do you agree with Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences? Why or why not?

I do agree with Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. I agree with this theory because I do not believe that Intelligence can be measured so narrowly. I think that everyone is smart in their own way. The important question to ask is how are you smart and not how smart are you.

Which of the following quotes is a statement of self-concept?

  1. I'm not good at solving interpersonal conflicts, but I am good at solving math problems

  2. I remember the first day of high school when I didn't know anyone else or have a clue about what to do or where to go

  3. I plan to go to college and major in music, but I don't know what I'll do after that.

  4. I don't have very many books on my shelves because I don't like to read paper copies.

I'm not good at solving interpersonal conflicts, but I am good at solving math problems

Everyone can always improve their study strategies. Think of one of your classes that you will be studying for this or next week. What will you do to encourage
higher order thinking while studying?

I will take the information that I learned in class this week and ask myself questions about it to test my level of understanding. Using these questions to analyze the information will help me make connections and will get me a step closer to higher order thinking.

According to Vygotsky, socialization in crucial if a student is going to maximize on learning opportunities. Explain a time in your life where you were able to learn more as a result of working with others.

I would say an experience where I learned more as a result of working with others happened recently. This semester I am taking a Lab Class( The science of everyday lab.) This past weeks lab was focused more on acceleration and time calculations. I worked with a few members of the class and did indeed learn better not only in terms of the lab but also in terms of the content. Also working with others lead to an opportunity of a study group formation in which we get together to do the labs or write the report!

For two different systems in Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model: give an example of something that influences or could influence your work, followed by a campus resource that you could us to work through this potential future barriers to success.

I would say Microsystems play a significant role in influencing work. I would say surrounding yourself with those you can count on during hardship is honestly the greatest thing you can do for yourself.  I would say a campus resource would be CAPS, but I don’t use it! With Exosystem I would definitely say things that happened around us or that we are aware of could influence our work. Such as the Title 9 cases at Eastern could make students feel a bit unsafe. I would a campus resource would be: Caps, Office of wellbeing and SEEUS!

Mrs. Cardot wants her students to enjoy math.  In order to help students associate math with pleasant thoughts, she introduces new manipulatives at the math center each week for students to use in solving problems.  Often the manipulatives involve edible snacks.  Mrs. Cardot's approach is an example of:

  1.  classical conditioning.

  2.   operant conditioning.

  3.   unconditioned response.

  4.   neutral response.

classical conditioning.

Explain Bloom’s taxonomy-what is it? What does it represent?

Bloom’s taxonomy is a breakdown of the levels of learning or understanding. It represents how each level of understanding is supported by the previous levels and how you can build up to the higher order thinking skills.

Vygotsky declared that to maximize learning, students must be in the zone of proximal development (ZPD). Consider the classes you are taking now - do you think you are in the ZPD in all of your classes? Describe some strategies an individual could use to get themselves in the ZPD if they find themselves falling short of that marker.

Zone of proximal development has to do with this basic idea of what you can and can’t do with the assistance of peers and professors and without their assistance. I would say ZPD relates to learning in terms of testing one knowledge and growth in class. We all come to class with a zero on the first day, as our grade increases so does our knowledge in the class. Whatever grade wevend up with is a direct reflection of how much we gained during the length of the class. I would say ZPD does come into play in all my classes. There are classes were I am taking where I am the independent learner and in charge of how I learn and what I decide to even learn. There are others where there’s more guidance and discussion about content. I would say some strategies an individual could use ZPD is definitely use office hours, tutoring, research projects, internships and workplaces as an opportunity to build and maintain skills you may need in the near future!

Think back to Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model of nested systems that impact inindividual’s experience. Explain in your own words what this model represents. Possible connection to make: an individual student, experiences, environments, success and learning.

I would say the nested system sort of provide this guide for students in terms of what and who they need to prioritize in terms of going through college years in the most successful way possible. With that said these nested systems are in direct relation to an individual student themselves. I would say as we gain experiences our nested system tend to change periodically because what may have been included in our microsystem in the start of college is no longer included throughout college. With our environment, throughout college one’s environment may change in terms of moving from a dorm to an apartment or from a dorm to back home or vice versa.

Michael often gets out of his seat in the classroom.  His buddy has noticed his pattern.  Any time the teacher leaves the room, Michael gets out of his seat.  When the teacher returns, she reprimands Michael.  What is the antecedent of Michael's behavior?

  1.  The teacher leaves the room.

  2.   Michael gets out of his seat.

  3.   Michael's buddy observes Michael's behavior.

  4.   The teacher reprimands Michael.

The teacher leaves the room.
