  • Do not guess and do not carry out unclear orders.Ask for clarification immediately.

Ask them to repeat it immediately. Repeat back what you think you heard.

  • Use closed-loop communication.
    • Repeat the order back exactly.
    • Wait for confirmation.

How do you prepare a suction tip before you insert it into a patients' airway?

If the suction tip has a hole 1 to inches from the tip, close the hole to test that it is working.  Then insert the device without using the hole. Add after inserting

If the suction tip does not have a hole, test it by turning it on.  Then insert into the patient without the suction turned on. When in fully, turn it on to start the suction. Move around for good coverage.  Continue to suction as you exit.

How do you safety store a used needle?

Use a sharps container.  Never try to recap an already exposed needle.

How often do you rescue breath for a patient with a pulse but is not breathing? Adult and infant.

Adult:  1 every 6 seconds.

Infant: 1 every 2/3 seconds.

A patient is having an allergic reaction. They are attempting to use the wrong part of the body to administer their EPI pen.  What do you do?

Stop the incorrect administration if you can do so safely.  Explain clearly and simply: “That’s not the correct place — let me help you. Guide or assist with proper administration according to protocol and training.

  • For most epinephrine auto-injectors, the typical administration site is the mid-outer thigh.

You want to give glucose to a patient but you cannot because the patient cannot swallow.  What is that called?

 It is called a contraindication for giving that medication.

EXTRA:  What would be another example of a contraindication?   If a patient is in need of aspirin but is allergic..that is a contraindication.
